Sold a Knocking bottom end
hello all, looking for some advice really? i recently sold a bottomend to a guy from birmingham, he's fitted the engine and its now knocking? It was not knocking before it came out, the oil had been left in it till the morning he came to picked it up.
heres the advert, with link to video of it running before removal>>
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2566416.htm
He says he primed the oil filter/pump before starting the engine, He is going to send a video of it running tomorrow for me to listen an see what i think.
Is there any other reason why this would be knocking?
thanks guys

You didn't install it. The whole reason why people buy second hand is the they take the risk and by taking the risk save money of buying new.
But thats the risk and you gotta accept it.
This seems to be happening more and more on here of chancers. And reason is that spare cash isn't as easy to come by as once was and people are just been chancers.

i agree you are taking a chance but if it was knocking when i first started it after going through proper procedure i would want my money back. its just scooby engines they are an absolute nightmare buying 2nd hand.
the problem is the guy who bought it doesnt really know if you sold a dodgy engine and you dont know if he really did prime it properly can take a long time.

what sort of warranty did you offer!? unfortunatley this could be a downfall, why would you offer any warranty on a used £200 engine? Ok it may have been fine when you removed it but if indeed his engine is now knackered then what did you offer to cover?
can i offer advice, if you offer a warranty on any part then fit it yourself!!
i apologise if i come across rudely but i think you may have been caught with your pants down!!!

its not uncommon for the bottom end to let go after doing the head gaskets. compression is restored and it finishes off the tired bearings.
either that or hes transfered the cause of his first engien failure onto this engine.
e.g bad map, mods, fuel pump...

I basically told him the bottomend was 100% fine and running when removed. Im not a money grabber and said if the bottom end was knocking when it was fitted i'd give him his money bk. Im thinking has he used the old oil cooler/modine off the old block? Or not cleaned the head oil well's or turbo oil feed correctly?

unfortunatley, again if thats what you have told him then whether his poor workmanship has caused the failure, he will be expecting his money back. personally i would offer to go take his money back in person, that way you can have a look at whats going on and go from there. if it has been lashed in and you can see a way out then go for it. other wise dont be so nice time and go for sold as seen.
were not all as nice as we think.

If its local to you, pop round and check it is infact the engine you sold him. But honestly, if you buy an engine for £200, and just fit it without inspecting it, your asking for trouble.
Dont loose any sleep over it mate

Hang on a minute. You actually stated that you would refund him his cash if the engine was knocking when fitted?
Am I missing something here?
Yes, the guy may be a chancer and trying to get some cash back for his old engine, but you should have never have offered any kind of warrenty, especially as you were not in charge of fitting the engine. It's like selling a car and saying 'i've never had a crash in it, if you crash in the first week, I will give you your money back!'

Update: I recieved an email back from the buyer yesterday. now his car is a 2002 wrx.
He says he has put my bottomend (from a 1995 import) with version 8 heads, its also got a phase 1&half intercooler on? he also claims that the bottomend i sold him didnt have an oil cooler modine on(which it did)
Is it possible for the version 8 heads to marry up to an early bottomend?

I am not saying the guy fecked up but if it was fine when you had it and suddenly it is knocking after he fitted it and ran it then something happened after you had it and is out of your control and responsibility.

His non-Avcs WRX heads would bolt straight onto your bottom end.........if he has sourced some version 8 STi AVCS heads then they wold still bolt on but the WRX ECU would not be able to use them........

If he bolted his heads to your block did he skim both the block and heads? Did he use new gaskets? Did he time it correctly? All possible reasons why it may develop a knock or possibly a mis timing?

Hope you're well mate?
My take on this is that he's trying to hash something together and from what I can gather in my limited experience, it's never a good thing.......... If you're certain it had the oil pump, and he's now saying it doesn't then I'd be inclined to be cautious.
You're a nice guy, he probably realizes this, and possibly thinks he can take you for a wee spin.........

Couple things here...
1. You should have simply said sold as seen, more fool you for not doing so.
2. The guy lives in Birmingham, one of 2 places I would personally never deal with regards cars (Bradford the other).
Politely tell him to **** off. If he bugs you, change your email address or phone number (which is easily done with a crime number off the fuzz for harassment).
Sorry but you're a "little silly" offering a warranty and the other guy comes across an another blatant chancer from the West Midlands
Good luck
