Default Nitrous Oxide ?

Hi guys,

I'm thinking of getting Nos for my wrx which is currently running at around 285 bhp. A mate of mine is into his drag racing (TVR) and said I can buy a kit for £500 and he'll help me fit it. I will gain around 50bhp and quite a bit more torque. To me this all sounds pretty good but wondered if any of you thought otherwise. Also would I need to get another remap to allow for this

Cheers

Nitrous works really well on a turbocharged car 50bhp jets will probably give you a bit more with the turbo, just use a wet kit (you put fuel in as well), Wizards of NOS do really good kits! WON are the guys who fitted the nitrous to the white jag on Top Gear (off of black stig's demise)

Cheers for that Bobfrog. Would this affect the remap I have now or would a bit of tweeking with the Nos kit be ok ?

I would imagine it would need that map at least checkng if not tweeked! Your clutch and gearbox might not like the extra power much either.

This was one of my concerns. I thought the clutch and gear box might be ok at around 335 bhp ? I wouldn't really want to start replacing them or it could get expensive !!

Not at the level of 50bhp jets, generally no mapping is need because you increase the oxygen (from the N20) and fuel at the correct proportion, one the things that would affect it is if you're running loads of ignition advance, if it's fairly "safe" then it should be perfectly fine

I've only ever had it on an N/A engine so out of experience I can't say that much about a turbo setup just what I understand from friends with turbo nitrous cars have experienced

Check out WON's site and their forum: http://www.noswizard.com/

A WON (if not all nitrous kits) will come with a throttle position switch or a throttle pedal switch so it will arm at say 50% throttle (or wherever you set it), all depending on your current setup you might find that you can get the nitrous to start coming in as your natural peak torque/power starts to tail off so you'd not necessarily make that much more peek torque but could infact just have your peek torque for longer if you know what I mean

I use to run a progressive controller on my car, it would allow the power to feed in nicely without putting a big hit on the drivetrain, I use to run 50bhp jets on a 60bhp ka back in 2000, 2001, what a laugh that was!

By the time you've looked at it properly, you may find it better to go the larger turbo route. This is what most people end up doing and that way you have the extra power all the time.

If your car is mapped, you may need to retard the ign adv.

A standard clutch will struggle.

Didn't really want to get into upgrading turbo's and clutches as the price will start spiralling out of control.

I would shelve the nitrous idea in that case too.

Gotta pay to play, as they say

Sounds a good price, but replacing the clutch, gearbox etc has put me off a bit really. I thought the standard clutch and gearbox would be ok at 335bhp.

5 speed box might not love the idea of that power in that form. You will hear of plenty of 5 speed WRX's running that power on SNET, but its another thing to have the power fed in via a turbo, and another being rammed into the motor, then drive train via NOS.

p.s. Clutch will be ok imo providing you drive it wisely, hardly like you will be doing it everyday...but make no mistake extended use will kill the clutch and the box, and SEVERAL other standard WRX parts, no doubt. All imho of course.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I think I'll keep this scoob at 285bhp which isn't too bad tbh. I'll proabably buy a car with all the mods done next time rather than spending a lot of money getting this one quicker.

Do a RWD conversion, 285hp will be plenty then!
