First wrap electrical/electronic components in plastic bags and tape shut.
Spray with engine cleaner/degreaser, leave to sit for 30 minutes, agitate with a brush like a 1" paintbrush, leave for a further 30 minutes.
Use hose or watering can to sluice off muck, agitating again where necessary.
Leave to dry, mopping up any deep pools with rags/paper towels/J-cloths.

Something like Autoglym Engine Cleaner (pinky red label) or 3-in-1 Cleaner/Degreaser would do the trick. Spray some on and leave for a few minutes then use something like a conical pastry brush to gently loosed and remove the dirt. Rinse/spray with water then allow it to dry naturally.

what I did was get a toothbrush , some washing up liquid and water.
Wet the brush apply a little washing up liquid, rub it all over the manifold and let it stand for a few minutes. Give it a scrub with the brush and then wipe clean with a damp cloth. Mine looks almost as good as new.

Still laughing at the pastry brush. I have similar, it came with some Wonder wheels.

same as on the wonder wheels brush, although hot water and fairy liquid cuts through engine grease very well, and is a **** load cheaper than auto glym
Incidently, in Reading is a cost co, i have a card.....wonder wheels in there is £7 for 5 litres!....literally 1/10th the cost of Halfords, a right touch!!!!

+ 1 on covering the alarm siren...... Mine took a few days to dry out
I've used the Autoglym stuff which is pretty good. There's also some other brands like Gunk etc. One cleaner I have heard people discuss is 'Stardrops' which is an all purpose cleaner (APC) my Mum bought some, from where I'm unsure, but it can be diluted down and is supposedly very good for just about everything!
