Evening mate, you need to see how well it has been serviced really as poor oil changing or lack of it can be a big no no,ive personally changed oil on 2 which were badly kept for along time and with-in 1k miles the turbo's went along with a noisey top end's.
Also look at whether the cambelt has been changed recently because if due you have to counter in new water pump along with the job which isn't cheap any way, temp senders can be abit quirky causing poor running and bad consumption along with MAF sensor's.
But its still got to be said
Good night

S3 has a good spec, recaros/bose and the like, i had one and it was a nice car, water pump packed in not long after getting it, plastic blades, expensive, xenon headlight went, again expensive,
was a really nice car, just went to ring in it and found it was not for me lol. then back to a scoob,
if not for that ring trip would still of had it.

You might as well go and park your Scoob at the side of the motorway with yours hazzards on and pretend to be broken down - that will save you having to buy an Audi and do it for real

Hmm let me think
Pads, discs etc are on par with the STi, bottom ends tend not to be a problem with the 20v, unlike the STi. My TT decided that the torque convertor for the 4wd system was no longer any good and started to whine, £1750 plus vat for one of those.....
They are NOT full time 4wd so be aware of that. Haldex controllers if faulty are around £500 fitted if the prices are steady. MAF's go all the time so budget to fit one straight away. Timing belts are around the £375.00 mark with the water pump at an indy.
Other than that they are nice cars and basically an Audi TT in an A3 shell. I might have missed something off the list but I'm sure someone will chime in
*Edit* Thermostats on the 1.8 t 20v seem to be a problem*

moorning,
Have a look at the front chassis (below the engine) and the rear suspension, there is sometimes a bit of rust.
What MY is it? If it is a 1,8 you could tune them quite a lot, the 1,8 is a reliable engine. Sometimes Turbocharger failure, sometimes problems with the 4wd system.
Electric: ABS sensor, microswitches at door,..
have a check with VAG com whether there are fault codes listed or not.
