Default Advice/ help

Hi all,

I am new to the site having got my Subaru a few weeks back.

I have made a couple of posts but thought I would make one decent post here to try and get all my thoughts in the one place.

Just looking for some guidance from people who have experience of working with Subarus.

My car is a 2006 2.5L WRX hawkeye.

So far the following has been done to the car.
  • Panel Filter fitted
  • Exhaust changed - 2.5" Stainless back box, middle section with box removed and de-cat pipe on 2nd cat.
  • Anti roll bars upgraded and also poly bushes fitted.
  • Suspension arms upgraded and also poly bushes fitted.
  • Suspension lowered
Now I am not that happy with the brakes but have that in hand to get them upgraded, always one of the first things I get changed on my cars when upgrading/modifying.

The handling on the car is simply amazing so I do not need to do anymore there. It goes into any corner that I throw at it and never loses grip, very impressive.

What I am looking to do now is to make it a bit faster and looking for some guidance as to what people think I should do first.

What I was thinking is to change the turbo, intercooler, upgrade the fuel pump and then get the car remapped but not sure how much power I can through at the standard engine before I have to look at getting the internals changed?

Or maybe I should be looking at other mods first?

On the point of the intercooler, what type is better and would an STI one be enough for an initial upgrade of power?

The last thing that I know I want to do in the first stage is to fit some guages the the middle pod on the dash. Can you get any guages that plug into the OBDII port or do they all have to be wired in?

Any help/advice much appreciated.

Thanks

Michael.

yes you can upgrade to an STI intercooler and have the car remapped to run around 300bhp.
The trouble with the WRX hawk is the 2.5ltr engine and the 5 speed gearbox, the 2.5 isnt exactly the strongest and the 5 speed will suffer when you put more torque though it (and the clutch) so a nice 300/330ish lbs of torque will make for a nice quick road going car
Have a word with some of the mappers on here (in no particular order)

Could get a bluetooth OBD2 sender and use the Torque app on Android

The sti turbo, intercooler drop straight on with a decat or sports cat downpipe and you then have when mapped more power than an sti.

The 2.5 engines have occasional piston issues but I wouldn't let it put you off as it happens on the standard car and seems less likely on a looked after tuned example.

that is assuming you want to go that far as they make 290bhp 340lb torque with a remap once decatted etc

Around the 300 mark will be enough for me. I should get this with a decat and remap? Or do I need a different turbo and intercooler?

Guys, are newage cars so different from classics in suspension? The op has stiffened the front suspension but left the rear alone. On classics it's the other way round?

The std turbo will get to about 290.

to get to 300 or above you will need a bigger turbo unless you are extremeley lucky

Both front and back have been done, that was a mistake on my part, not used to 4 wheel drive cars!

Silly question: why did you not just buy an STi? 300bhp easy, engine and gearbox can take it all, not too mention all the other small differences.

Look at a PSI3 device instead of gauges

I like doing stuff to cars, never buy the one with it all done. That is just me I guess. Also STI models seem to attract a pretty hefty premuim when buying. It seems I can get a decent amount of power from my WRX for not much more money that what I paid for it.

To a certain degree, I agree. The problem is that at 300bhp you are at the limit of major parts.

You can still mod STis. Mine off to finish of suspension, engine and interior mods in march.

Suppose the argument could be made that I should have bought a spec C

Another option for you, is to look at STi parts for your car. Ie. Turbo, TMIC, fuel injectors and a remap.

Good luck with it

Thanks, one of the biggest problems I have is that on my previous car I ruined it by going to far. I had a VW Gold R32, lovely car. I then fitted a supercharger, spent loads on it and then pretty much ruined the car as it was just too fast and the handling was just not up to the power the car had.

That is why I only want about 300BHP but did not want to get an STI as I like to modify a car and watch it develop, something to work towards is the way I look at it. Also like to see it getting quicker and drive it through all the different stages of it changing.

Is no fun for me to buy it already done, but that is just personal preference for me.

Looking at this or similar, I always spend a lot on brakes.

I see what you mean. APs are but rather pricey. Brakes are always are worthwhile investment

Any pics of current and previous car?

I plan to take some of the current car this weekend once I have given it a clean, very dirty with weather at the moment.

Got plenty at home of old car but would no doubt get plenty of abuse for posting them on a Subaru forum lol
