I was looking at the A3 3.2 quattro is that the same? I want an AWD really but can't find anything close by or in my budget

In my personal experience even the 'proper' quattro is pretty poor in extreme snow ice (by that I mean sit and spin one wheel without diverting the power). This may up set some people but the awd of the subaru is far better.
Just from personal experience with an Allroad

Quattro system is pretty poor imho.
They have a LSD centre diff, and two open diffs front and back. The wheels are stopped spinning by application of the brakes per wheel, which is great on tarmac.
BUT there is no default for other surfaces, so its rather dim witted, and causes more trouble than they solve.

No idea mate The reason I know about the haldex in the S3 is because the TT has the same system. As for the other models, pass?

My A4 has been epic in the snow over the last month or so, even on worn P zero's. It's a bit low though so scraped it's belly on the snow piled up between the tracks but no worse that a Subaru I'd imagine.
Can't do a direct comparisson with the Subaru as I've never driven it in the snow. Maybe next year.

The only VAGs with true Quattro rather than the part time Haldax like my V6 4motion are ones with longitudinal engines like the V8s. So that's all A3s and TTs, including the 5 cylinder engines.
However they are still very good although not a patch on full time AWD systems.
