We don't tow cars as a matter of course, preferring trailers or flatbeds.

However, a few highlights from a previous life, when it was common.

Being towed for over 40 miles in a Ferrari 365GT, without electrics, power brakes or steering, in the rain, on a short rope behind a Bedford van driven by a very short lunatic. They had to prise my fingers off the wheel.

Going out in a Land Rover to tow in a Fiat 124. We arrived at the Lady's house, and hitched up the rope. I sat in the Fiat, window open, saying to the Lady that we'd call her when we'd fixed it. I turned my head towards the Land Rover, just in time to see it drive off. Without gently pulling in the slack. No kidding, I think my head hit the back window, and it probably took 150 yards before I'd got the thing back under control. My "driver" said that nobody had told him what to do. I soon rectified that situation, and I bet they heard me in Baghdad..

Setting off in a Transit van to go racing, full of bodies in the back. We broke down on the way back when the fuel line burnt through on the exhaust. (!)
Another Transit in convoy took us in tow. then that one broke down, so we fixed the first one by nicking bits off the second one, then towed the second one home. Thankfully we had seven mechanics on board!

And if you've never tried it, have a go at towing when the roads are covered in ice. Huge fun.

you should never tow a 4 wheel drive vehicle, should be on a flatbed.
