Unhappy Sudden Horrible Fault - Help!

My 98 UK Turbo has been running absolutely great lately, then suddenly yesterday morning it began juddering on the way to work. There is a loss of power and a severely violent judder at about 2800 revs and the car wont really go beyond that.

When I've driven for a bit, the engine will go past 3k revs and the turbo sounds and works ok, but the judder has got more and more common since then.

Today on the way home from work the judder was happening as soon as I turned on the ignition. I now have the Check Engine light and a car that will barely go past 3k revs and ticks over at 500rpm or less and is constantly hunting at idle.

After ploughing 2 grand into the suspension, brakes, and bodywork this summer, this is a massive kick in the teeth.

Any ideas guys?? ...Much much appreciated.

Firstly why the **** are you driving it when its juddering ?

The fact that you have the engine light on .. (as I just found out) is a good thing ..

Connect the two black wires under the steering column and read the flashes ..

I would guess it is MAF failure or similar and the car is in limp mode, dont drive it and check the error code.

Thanks guys, I was worried you were about to tell me the head gasket had gone.

I will try to check the codes on the ECU, but Im guessing I'l need one of those computer things u plug in the socket under the dash?

Whats the deal with the 2 black wires under the steering column?? I have hooked those 2 up in the past, which made the check engine light flash, so with the car running fine I just unplugged them again. Are they not supposed to be connected?

Thanks

Noooooooooooooooooooo

Not unless you want to risk turning a possible £80 bill into a £2000 rebuild bill, you won't. You have been warned. Treat these cars in a cavalier fashion at your peril

Connect the two wires and watch the CEL. Count how many long flashes and how many short. Report back on here.
