Default Best speed for best mpg?

Opinions please!

Been away for a while - to France for 5 weeks and have been unemployed so been quiet on the motoring front.

Managed to get a temp job where I do the A30 to Honiton. Now for you hypermilers which is best (average) speed? I do no more than 80 as turbo thinks about coming on at 3k. 70 is the usual speed (unless I'm running tiny bit late )

Any advice would be great

Sian

I would imagine about 60mph or just under 3000 rpm. When Andy f mapped my car he asked me what my cruising speed was, and then set the car to get the best mpg at my chosen speed.

I would love a remap but would need a new ECU as mine isn't remappable (said Martyn @ enginetuner). But interesting you said under 3k though

Zero miles per hour.

I think it depends on your car, engine and gearbox, but I have heard from many sources that it is around the 55mph mark.

In the `old days` Parkers Guide `used` to quote mpg (urban, combined etc.,)as 56mph for the best consumption.

The 'best' speed is in 5th gear at the lowest engine revs that your car will happily run at, so if theroad was flat, then about 40mph or so. However with all the hills on the A30 I expect you'll need more revs to produce enough torque to get up them.

Try to keep the revs down and stay out of the turbo zone. I can pretty much maintain 69 miles an hour on the motorway keeping revs below 3000 on five speeder and VF35. Frugal = boring.

I get the best mpg depending on how smoothly i drive. I don't focus particularly on the speed because there's many factors that affect that (wind speed/direction, inclines, road surface, other cars, etc) I just try to keep my foot steady and not brake too much.

people aren't saying they always drive like that... the thread is about on a long commute where by if your blasted it all the time i doubt you would make it to work as you'd be finding a petrol station every 5mins lol.

In 6th I barely go over 2000 rpm. The vacum reading from the turbo is around -.2/-.4 bar.

I would guess( for what its worth) the lower the speed would also reduce wind resistance.

Got it in one - it's only a 25 min run with little town driving at either end - that's what kills me! If I wanted to be frugal I would have kept my crappy ZR
