Buying WR1
Hi peoples, got rid of my classic scoob last year for something a bit more practical, but to be honest I regretted it after a week of selling her! Anyways, I've been keeping an eye on the WR1's mainly cos they seem to hold their money a bit better due of the limited numbers made etc.. I just need to know, do they suffer from any common problems like eating mafs etc..??

Bugger, I've fallen for these bloody Wr1's - they look the part, lovely colour too (without sounding gay). But I appriciate the comments - I cocked up last time when I got my 1998 classic by not doing my homework first, then finding out you had to buy a new ecu to get them re mapped, but only on the 1998 models! Back to the drawing board I think, might even go back to the original plan of a P1...

The WR1 is still a great car, and if you like the colour that's half of it!
You just need to understand it's not got some of the performance goodies the JDM's had at that time, (which is why Tony suggested looking at those). But had more than the UK STI's until 2005.

You can pick something up like this for the same money as some of the wr1's
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2063236.htm
And white really does look good (plus it is very rare )
The 2005 models have the flare over the rear arch, they have a wider track and the geometry is the same as the Spec C's (which proved to be better as it reduced understeer), they added yaw sensors for better/quicker correction on the A-DCCD and the JDM cars also have quick rack steering makiing turn in and steering feel more precise.
All the JDM's from 2003 are twin scroll with equal length headers, no burble but they sound more rally car than any of the other impreza's out there (plus they have more goodies fitted like rear wiper and auto water spray)

WR1's are fantastic cars, I sold mine about eighteen months ago and have regretted it ever since. I also love the colour and the black interior is much nicer than the bright blue interior in my Hawkeye.

Apart from the knocking rear shocks which plague all newage cars it was a great daily driver. I uprated the rollbars and drop links and fitted an anti lift kit to sharpen up the handling. I had intended to tune it to circa 400bhp but was offered a Hawkeye running considerably more than this for less money than it would cost to upgrade the WR1, unfortunately it wasn't the bargain I thought it was and needed an engine rebuild

Ponder, ponder. I've had WR1 4yrs now and not regretted it all. It is the most powerful 2.0l UK Impreza I believe. The argument for the JDM is something worth considering but it won't be a limited edition model and if I were looking I'd be tempted by the spec. I don't know how the JDM models hold there value compared with WR1 but that may not be a factor deciding your choice.
As far as I can remember the WR1 bits different to STi:
320bhp PS @5800rpm
420Nm@4000rpm
18" pff-7 lightweight wheels reduce unsprung weight
Lowered 25mm at front and 10mm at rear
Prodrive road springs & bump stops, don't know if shocks same as sti.
stainless steel mesh grills
PIAA driving lamps - recommend change std lighting to xenon all round
charcoal seats
WR1 embroidered mats
aluminium gear **** - very cold in winter
aluminium Petter Solberg plaque inside car
aluminium numbered tax disc holder
aluminium key ring
WR1 service book
Uprated fuel pump
Uprated sport cat/downpipe
three port boost solenoid
Unique ECU mapping
Std Tyres were Pirelli P zero nero 225/40/18/92Y
Tyres on mine Pirelli Rosso but will prob get Vredestein Sessantas next.
0-60mph 4.25s confirmed by Mike Wood of Prodrive
WR1 has an intermediate service every 5k mls (oil & filter).
mpg. motorway off boost 2600rpm 29mpg
normal motorway 23mpg
fun 16mpg or less
The wheelbase is 2525mm whereas later cars, JDM etc. 2540mm for more caster and less understeer, I had the Whiteline ALK fitted at Mocom which gives half a degree more caster and I think reduces lift off oversteer a little.
Only 500 WR1's were built by Prodrive.
