Default Is it possible to have 2 intercoolers?

Just been reading up on the new Brabus SL that has 4 intercoolers!

Would it be possible to fit 2 intercoolers say a large TMIC and a FMIC to a scooby. If so would there be any advantages to this or would it be a complete waste of time effort and money to even develope it.

Pipework = lag for a small engine and turbo...

Two sequential turbos and inter-state cooling is for tractor pulling !

Brabus were probably short of room, so it's a packaging requirement.

I.E. Front mount turbo feeding two smaller IC at either side of the grile...

Would be better off fitting a good charge-cooler system. Get the bits off an old legacy 4cam turbo and use upgraded pumps and larger front radiator.

It is quite possible to do this and as already indicated some cars particularly those running two or more turbos make use of this set up. As regards a Subaru Imprzza, I don't really see any point in reinventing the wheel when the existing FMICs available can more than handle the requirements without the complication of two intercoolers, packaging and location etc.

I guess the question is what do you intend to gain by fitting 2 intercoolers?

Increased performance? if so you can do that others ways for less hassle. If there are really any noticeable gains to be made at all by having 2 intercoolers.

Extra weight too.

It seems like a diminshed return to me - alot of hassle for little reward.

I discussed this at work with an engineery/analysis type guy (also a member here...) a while ago whilst looking at making the FMIC vs TMIC decision....

Apparently it would just disrupt the flow of air going into the engine with two air flows colliding and having some kind of friction and less efficiency blah blah going through the inlet.

That's my dumb@ss explanation of what I was told....lol

depends on how the air intake is designed, aerodynamics are worked out inside pipework as well as externaly on cars. you can actulay design the system to be more effiecent with twin coming feeds than single due to the motion and vortacies you can create using apposing air flows.

we use the same methodoligy in fluid dymanics to designing liquid flows in piping systems
