Default Things to look out for on a classic RA

Looking at getting a classic ra, N reg.

Are there any specific problems that are known of with this model, and what should i be looking out for in general?

Any help is appreciated.

Prob the same issues your 95 wagon would be prone to

rust, 15 years of wear and tear on hoses, bushes, suspension, etc etc

Just look out for any noises such as whinning gearbox, rocker cover gasket leaks, check if there is no oil mixture in the coolant, look out for blue, black, white smoke & finally test the clutch out properly. This is a general check i would do.

If it's an RA it should have a closed deck block. You can tell this by the raised hatchings on the block the same as the heads have. It should also have a 5th injector in the inlet manifold. Check that it's got the relevant gearbox. Should have water spray too and a roof vent if an sti on a 96 onwards iirc. The wrx ra didn't have them.

So all in check that all the codes are right for an ra. You can find them on www.type-ra.co.uk.

Finding a 'good' RA is quite hard, fingers crossed.

Couple of other bits to look for - shouldn't have side skirts or rear spoiler. If it has they may have been added as a factory option but no doubt some oik has put them on. If the boot has no holes give me a shout as I'm looking for one.

Hand wind windows not electric. Again electric windows were and option. The same with air con.

Oh and it's a myth that the whole had no sound deadening. It just had less.

air con wasn't an option, they all had it iirc - they didn't have the automatic climate control though.

Have found a couple that i'm interested in.

Did they come with the sti style tail lights as in the second link as the first has standard also the inlet manifold did they come in red as the first link it has a silver one.

Don't know why but when someone puts genuine in a title it starts to make me wonder if there hiding something.

Opinions on both would be appreciated, i know you can't tell much from a picture or two but i'm thiking along the lines of the second one as they seem to be an importer that has various RA's and type R's for sale.

The top ad states speedline alloys and they're just standard sti alloys. Looks like an sti ra. has the roof vent and dccd. The name of the seller would put me off a little tbh.

SVA imports source very good cars. Again an sti ra by the looks of things.

As for the red vs silver inlet manifold. That's the difference between a v2 and v3. You can also tell by the intercooler and the facelift bonnet, head lights and grill. The v3 is slightly more desireable in to most as it has the facelift. I might be telling you something you already know but if you're planning on big mods you're looking at a whole ecu change on the second one as the v3 ecu can't be piggy backed like the v2 can.

Ask both sellers to get you the applied model codes and for proof that they've still got their cdb. Ig they haven't then the price you pay should reflect that.

Not really looking to modify engine wise, just looking for a clean subaru.

So the first one is a version 2, and the second one a version 3.

Had a quick look throught the link you gave so will enquire about the relevant codes.

Cheers for your help.

For an N Reg classic, most certainly ! I know its not an RA, but my 555STi Wagon cost me £2.5k 2 years ago.

I love the RA but.....the 5k ticket price will not be the end of your outlay. With the best will in the world I recon you would throw another 3k (read 5k) on it getting it running/handling and stopping to most peoples satisfaction. There are better cars to invest in unless you have the cash to do it properly IMHO. Nothing worse than buying a car and killing it due to lack of funds to maintain/improve it.

Wise words. I paid £2400 for my wrx type ra a couple of years back. Spent a fortune on getting it right (coil overs, proper brakes, wheels to suit, arbs, drop links etc, setup, exhaust, induction etc). It stood me in at around £6.5k. Just the same as you most likely would with any classic. That didn't even include any engine work.

For £5k you could get a nice classic sti with a few tidy mods and have it serviced as soon as you get it. But as a previous RA owner, would I have another one over my current sti, absofunkinglutly.

Kind words

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeBAx_3qeiY

The best Impreza I have owned (had a few GC8s since my first WRX in 1997), and the RA was fanbl**dytastic.

It did take quite a large amount of £££s to get the car to perform as well as it did - but worth it.

Any regrets whilest in my 3 1/2 years of ownership - absolutely none.

Regrets now - plenty, in that I had to sell the car in November 2009 as my wife had lost her job, and we needed an injection of cash into the household.

Empty space in my garage will need filling (soon):
