Default Help with HiDs in Europe please

I am off to the 'ring this weekend and have everything sorted apart from my headlamps. I've got a hawkeye with HiDs and was told that the "driving-in-Europe-headlight-converter-sticker-things" won't work with HiD headlamps.

I tried ringing my local Subaru dealer who couldn't help but said he'd phone Subaru HQ for me and find out what I have to do to make them compatible with driving abroad. A couple of hours later, the same dealer phoned me back saying that Subaru couldn't give me a definitive answer to the problem either, and their best idea was to take a trip to Halfords!!!!!

This can't be the first time anyone has had this problem. Anyone able to come up with an answer to this? What's everyone else who's driven in Europe done?

Thanks guys

I have a suspicion that the Hawk headlights do not have a left flip up but just a flat dip beam. You can see if this is true by just pointing them at a wall and looking at the pattern. If this is true then you have no problem.

BUT: if you are travelling through France, be prepared for M. Le Flic to stop you and ask how you have modified the lights to conform to RHD......and if you can't, expect a fine on the spot.

Thanks D1CCY, anyone able to confirm this?

Alcazar - thanks for the heads up. And If D1CCY is correct, how the hell do I tell Officer Crabtree that I don't need to adjuct the bloody things?

Shameless BTTT post I'm afraid - need a definitive answer for Friday!

Put some strips of tape where they MIGHT be. Officer Dibble won't know if it's right and if he sees them, he won't stop you

Have you TRIED shining them on a garage door to SEE if they produce a flat beam, or an assymetric dip:

Flat: _____ _____

Assymetric: \____ \____

As Alcazar says, try them. If OK you can take a photo of the pattern to prove to the Gendarmes.

Failing that I've been a skinflint in the past and measured the pattern of a generic sticker in Halfords and then gone back home and replicated with insulating tape. You could, of course, actually buy one and stick on. Can't see it matters if it isn't car specific, it only has to look like you've made the effort.
