Difference between buying a jap & UK blobeye
Looking at buying a blobeye but I don't know which to go for!
I can pick a jap 01 plate blobeye up with 68k for £4500
or a UK 02 blobeye up with 79k for £5500
What is the difference? Does it matter if it's Jap or not??
What would you go for and why?

Done to death mate, jap cars are better spec'd with stronger internals from what I have been told. I may be wrong but I think the bugeye be it the uk or jap version were one of the strongest out of the factory blocks. Also with the different headers on the jap cars you loose the Subaru flat four burble but get a sound that IMO is similar to a bike on full beans once you get it wound up. The jap cars are twin scroll turbo units so spool faster and have a more linaer power band where as the uk need to get going then you get that kick into the seat if that makes sense.
Test drive both as you have to live with it

The 01/02 cars still have that burble, similar engine to the uk car, they are mapped for 100 ron fuel though so a remap is advisable, 03 onward JDM STI's are twin scroll and those have equal length headers

Never knew that tony, thought all the jap cars were a twin scroll so you learn something new every day.
The newage jap cars seem to be ok unlike the classic where a fair old chunk of them let go.

99 with ob or some form of knock detection device (knocklink/ks3 etc)
Steve, yup they didnt change until the MY03 cars to twin scroll, deemed the better engine due to some enhancements they did

I've had both UK and JDM versions, albeit the jap WRX was a 52 blobeye - one of the first. As has been stated, the JDM cars are generally higher specced and sometimes come with aftermarket front and rear spoliers which make them more unusal.
Mine was mapped by the importer and they also retro-fitted the HID lamps once it had been tested - they add a huge improvement to the standard UK headlights.
And yes, the car you are interested in will have the burble - and mine even came with an STi Genome exhaust - although I never realised it's rarity and sold it with the car.
Good luck - I love my UK version too so you won't go wrong either way!
