I have been a member of the forum for a while and i am looking at buying a classic 95 reg wrx sti, i was talking to a mate who has had a couple in the past an he was telling me that when i get one to give it a good service an that i should disconnect the crank sensor before i start the car after changing the oil, i have done a search on this an have seen mixed feelings about it and now im in 2 minds as to what to do buy the scooby or leave it an buy another pulsar, but i have always wanted a scooby.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks
Mark

I've never had the crank sensor disconnected when the oil has been changed in 7 years of owning an Impreza and nothing has ever gone wrong (that's about 13 oil changes).

Most people do recommend disconnecting the crank sensor.

I think you guys are on about the "cam angle sensor" & not the crank sensor. (top near-side camshaft front cover;near the battery)

With the cam angle sensor unplugged the car will now not start thus allowing you to spin the engine over until the oil is circulated (usually 15secs or so).

QUOTE FROM A VERY REPUTABLE ENGINE BUILDER:

"The starter is rotating the engine at a speed of approx 300rpm, about 5 times a second. If the vehicle is serviced at 5000mile intervals for say 50,000miles and the above procedure (disconnecting the cam angle sensor) has not been observed, it is entirely possible that the engine will have been run without sufficient oil pressure for 2-3 seconds every oil change.

The simple maths prove that your lovingly serviced engine, if not treated as our instructions advise, may have been spinning without sufficient oil pressure for up to 30 seconds, OR 150 revolutions, if serviced 10 times in that period. Neither of which is to be recommended and in our opinion is a major contributory factor in big end failures."

[end quote]

Anyway I wouldn't let that put you off OP as its a really simple thing to do and you won't get the boxer rumble from a pulsar Gareth

Yes Gareth thats what im mainly after a different sound to the plain old tapping sound of the Pulsar shims, sod it it only takes 5 mins to unplug a sensor its going to kill me 5mins extra on an oil change

The Subaru boxer engine does sound so lovely If you need advice before you buy a Subaru then it's always worth asking people on here. You never know someone may even know the car your looking at and will be able to tell you how well its been looked after.....or not as the case maybe.
