Default head gasket thickness.

hi just wondering if anybody can help need to get new head gaskets for engine rebuild but dont know what thickness i need car is 1997 sti but im putting in a version 5 type r bottom end if this makes a difference also what the chances of my head been damaged for bottom end going as been told as long as cambelt didnt snap they should be ok and just need a clean is this true?

i was told with sti heads, 1.6mm
thats for sti v4 heads

I'd say it's worth checking them out thoroughly while they are off. It's no good not being sure when that much work is involved! The comp ratio should also be properly worked out, or it's just a guess.

I would also like to know this. My head gasket has gone, i was thinking of getting the heads skimmed and dont know what thickness gasket i will require

measure your old gasket, then when scimmed.
ask the engerneering place how much was taken off

Full overhaul is around £150 ( strip clean build, cut and lap valves and seats and surface heads inc vat ) Another £60 ish for shimming clearances, £80 ish if the guides need doing.. Comp ratio 8 to 1 to 8.5 to 1 is manageable.

ok cheers again alan for the help. can anybody recommend anywhere cheaper than dealers for gasket kit and oil cooler modine as been quoted 280 plus vat and 140 plus vat respectivly. dont want anything rubbish though.
