Question What is the best way to buy a car?

I haven't had to buy a car for years so i dont know the best way to go forward.

I want to sell my car and buy another one. I will be putting some cash towards a car and a small bank loan.

If i see a car i want, i either then have to sell mine very quickly before the one i want gets sold or put down a deposit to hold the car until i sell mine.

If i put down a deposit to hold the car, chances are that the seller will only hold the car for a limited period and if i cant sell my car then i will come unstuck. Also if i do it this way i cant do a deal and get the car cheaper as they are already doing me a favour. There is also the risk that the seller is dodgy and i lose my deposit.

I dont know what to do for the best as i dont want to sell my car before i buy as i am then without a car. But i want to have the cash ready for when i buy a car so i have a better chance of getting what i want.

Is it worth getting a bigger loan so i dont have to worry about selling my own car before i buy and then pay back the extra loan when i sell my own car? Then there is the worry that i might not be able to sell my own car.

I will most likely be buying private as i assume i will get a better deal by paying less but then i wont get any sort of warranty.

I am looking for a Honda Civic type R but not a new model, one that is about 4/5 years old i think.

Can anyone advise me on what to do for the best.

Personally i'd go for the larger loan then sell your old one in your own time, that way you wont be desperate to sell and accept silly money.
Then when you do sell it, put all the money into a savings paying direct debit for the loan so you don't get tempted to spend it.

Or alternatively, why not try and sell yours first, once sold buy a cheap crappy car (£300-400) to tie you over until you get the loan/find the right Civic? Then sell the crapper or px if getting the Civic from a dealer?

Depends significantly on your financial situation though really

Hmmmn, its a tricky one. I am with two banks but i haven't explored interest rates and interest free periods or anything yet. I know i can get the loan but i dont want to be stuck paying back loads of interest. I suppose i should look into interest free periods etc before i do anything.

Also, do you have any idea how much more a dealer would sell the same car as opposed to a private sale. Say the car was 7-10 thousand. Is there a set sort of figure dealers add on to make their bit?

Hi Sara,

Although its not what you want to hear I would personally buy from a dealer if you are looking at buying a CTR. I had one of these previously and they are a great bit of kit, but are naturally aspirated and althoughh VTEC ECU is fairly bulletproof I would prefer peace of mind of dealer warranty. They sometimes will be able to offer you an additional warranty on top of their 6month/1yr one they norm give, although at a cost. If you were only paying 3 or 4 k prob worth gamble of going private but when looking at spending big coin, dealer for me....Hope this helps. Also dealers norm put on @1k cash on top of private...ish

I am divided at what to do. A lot of people have modded the car with good extras and you seem to get a lot for your money, but on the flip side, if the car has been messed with there is a chance that the mods were not done as professionally as they have said and then you have loads of problems later on.

Obviously, getting a car through a dealer eliminates these teething problems with a decent warranty but you pay through the teeth.

Decent CTR's are sold so quick you dont have a lot of time to dither and you really have to know what you are looking at if you pay cash on the spot.

I have seen some seemingly great cars being sold privately and you think, if only i had the cash in my hand now.

Next week i will start looking in earnest but i also have to decide how best and where to get a loan.

My scoob has never had any mechanical problems and has been a great car to own for the last 7 years, the only probs has been user error lol

I dont know what a dealer will give me for mine, part ex, that is something else to explore..............i am not looking forward to all this

I find the type of people that own something as specialised as a type R tend to think thier car is worth as much as one from a dealer......If it was me.... I,de look at dealers first , at least you have some comeback with a registered dealer and some dealers are tied into there Franchisee's warrenty .... like Vauxhalls and I,m sure others are similiar if not the same.... and well worth the extra just for the peace of mind

I havnt looked at dealer prices yet but i have noticed that all the cars on Pistonheads etc look very over priced and that the bargain ones are always already sold.

I think i have sort of decided that a dealer would be the best bet. The first thing to do would be to take my number plate off my scoob. Does anyone know how long it takes to go through DVLA and how much it costs?

ooh.....lol...think number plate thingy takes about 2 weeks...?..dealer is way forward... if you see tidy CTR in dealers you could always use yr lady charms and leave a small cash deposit. Most dealers are grateful for any custom and sales nowadays.......

Number plate transfer then. Is that right?

being a woman means you dont have to leave a cash deposit, a phone number might work.......... can i borrow yours?

Seriously though, do you think i am better off doing a part ex or selling mine privately? I dont know what the market is like out there but i assume things have changed over the years and with the recession........

It was reg in 01 but i have no idea what i will get for it or should ask for it. I have a brand new original front bumper to put on it but it has to be painted first. My wheels are only 6 months old and she has done just under 60,000 miles. I have had her for 7 years. I will be sad to see her go but i need something smaller and more practicable <is that the right word?

Dealer is the better option and as its a bad time of year for them selling, you should be able to get a decent discount
