Does any else with the new STI7 have problems starting it in the mornings.
Mine is garaged at night and every morning turn the key it fires lovely then tries to carry on running, sometimes it just stalls but on second crank it's fine.
Does it sound like the choke not coming on.

Question

Sounds silly but how are you starting the car??
Do you start the car with your foot on the clutch?
do you keep the key turned for long enough?
have you all the electrical bits turned off??

I start the key without pushing clutch or accelerator,
radio is on.
It turns over lovely, loads of power in the battery but once it started it struggles to get the revs up intially.
I usually give it a help with the accelerator after its started.
My old my99 started lovely.

Question

Try radio off, foot on clutch, it could just be that the car is still a little stiff as shes new, happened a few times in my MY00 but dont have any probs now, what sort of mileage do you have on the clock?

Have the same thing in mine some mornings. Turn it on and she fires up, but stuggles for a few seconds. A quik blip of the loud pedal seems to do the trick. I wondered if it might be a choke thing as well. Only done it to me a few times (and not recently), so it might just be a bedding in thing...

Did it on mine yesterday for the first time. When I blipped the throttle, it cut out. It then took two more attempts to get it going. Certainly felt and sounded like it had over-choked and flooded the engine. The follow-up lengthy turnover of the engine seemed like it was clearing its lungs.

Worried at the time, but I like Tony think it is nothing too serious for now and that this car is only a week old and just needs some more miles under her belt.

My car is also parked in a garage, and the car not starting at the twist of the key, is one of very few gripes about my STI. Starting is most definetely not an elegant process.
The manual says; clutch down, NO gas, crank for 5-10 sec. If it doesn't start, crank again. I find a 3-4 sec first crank, turn off, then crank a second time to work best. Remember no accelerator.

I've had similar problems with my MY01 WRX, my old MY97 used to give me similar problems. I have found that the best method of starting is to turn the key so the ignition lights come on, and you can here the fuel pump spark into life. After a couple of seconds it stops, then I turn it over and it starts 1st time with no problems.

Dont touch the throttle when starting as this is a bad idea. I did once on my old MY98 and it took me ages to get it going.

Yup,

Clutch in, no throttle, switch ignition on to prime fuel system, wait a few seconds and then turn key all the way to engage the starter.

Sounds like not enough fuel, rather than too much.

That should work

Thumbs up

Agreed. Get the ignition lights on, you'll hear the fuel pump wine and then the sound will fade. Takes a couple of seconds, nothing drastic. (Even easier to hear with the door open or window down).

I've only recently been told that having the clutch depressed (even in neutral), helps remove some load on the motor as it's being started.

The car has down 1800 miles now so I would have thought by now it should start ok.
Also I'm running it on Super unleaded as I thought it may have been the petrol.
Any it's going in next week to hopefully stop the blimming brakes from squealing all the time so I shall get them to look at it.
Also take a copy of this thread to show them it's not just me with the problems.

Car had now done over 3000 miles and still has the strange symptoms described above. Some days it starts on first turn of the key and other days (like today) it takes a couple of winds to fire up. It starts revving at about 1700, and then drops back to about 1000 and settles out. If you blip the throttle during this time, it almost behaves as if it is flooding.

Yesterday after driving over 100 miles, I parked the car in a garge forecourt right beside the main road. After about half an hour, I started the car and went to move off immediately in to a gap in the traffic, but the car did not want to respond to the throttle…and I missed the gap so to speak. Seems to me it was again going through the little start up procedure. At home, I have to reverse out the garage, so I have never really notice this before. I do not touch the throttle until I am off the drive and pointing the right direction.

By the way brakes still squealing under light braking and they are well bedded in!

Well I would say that from the feedback there is a problem with the starting, also as you say the brakes do only squeal under light breaking when going slowly but all the time in reverse.
