Default Fuel Warning Light

I have a '98 STi and even with the needle right on the 'E' line* the low fuel warning light doesn't come on. Is the light broken or do I still have plenty of fuel left? I don't want to find out the hard way.
Thanks.

*Yes, yes I know I shouldn't let it get that low but there were 4 accidents in 10 miles on the M11 yesterday afternoon.

There is no warning light unfortunately. Mine regularly drops so that its touching the E and I have never run out yet in two years.

on my 98 STI Type R there is a warning light ,comes on (about ½way) in between the last line and E and as the fuel goes down the light glows brighter.

Yup, same here - my warning light definitely works, I would check the bulb in the dash is okay 1st as I reckon thats the easiest place to start

I had a similar problem with my 99 STi.

I have tracked it down to a the float assembly sender being up the ying yang. The little sensor in the plastic box then cuts in and cuts the fuel.

Real pain the ****!

IIRC the low fuel light is only fitted to cars with the facelift dash i.e V4 onwards.

*****UPDATE*****

according to the owners manual,..its only there to show you what side of the vehicle the fuel door is on. not to show that it is open.

fair enough...now we know then

There was a suggestion, a few years ago, that the side the petrol 'handle' is shown on the Fuel Guage is the side of the car that the cap is.
