I ran between 340 and 360 for 18 months, nearly 40000 miles before it sh@t itself. I believe AlanG engine ran around 400 for a good while, and Fuzz had his running mid 400's for ages.

IMO though, at 350+ its a question of how long will it last? Every driver is different, some have 400+ and are gentle, some have 350 and beat the crap out of them!

401 bhp here, done 2 gearbox's but never had any engine trouble. It was mapped by Bob Rawle though which probably helped.

Well modified and with a1 mapping they can do 350, above that and you should probably start asking questions about how the car is used and longevity before proceeding further.

That said, Bob had no reservations about going for 400 with my MY99. But did advise that the gearbox and clutch would say cheerio before very long. The knack appears to be achieving the target output without exceeding the boost the internals can run (proba about 1,4-1.5 peak on a UK classic.

But it's really a "how long is a piece of string" type question.

Know a local car running 356/350 on standard internals, took part in various track days for years inc Ten Of The Best etc and still going strong, engine has never been touched!!

Oh and it has 156,000 miles on it as well ....but is serviced every 5k or less, and is well looked after....just goes to show doesnt it

Some will go pop at 240bhp, some more at 300bhp, 350 is pretty much your safe limit for cast pistons/rods, and I wouldnt want to do the same with a classic STI with those rods though you do get a few that seem to hold on quite well, you get a lot more that dont

Another thing to consider is how much power do you need relative to how much you can afford?

A classic with 320bhp+ is a very quick car (remember it only weighs around 1250KGs) it'll be more than enough for most. Sure, you can go higher, but can you stomach the costs to do it properly/if things go **** up?

A 16g, 550cc injectors, fuel pump, boost controller and a remap should see you at that figure

Mine did 334 on the last RR session, since then its had another 2 deg of ignition advance added so i would guess at a solid 350 now.

Should have said that the car mentioned above is on a 16G turbo, uprated injectors, headers, exhaust, 6 speed box etc etc
