If you didn't knowingly sell the car with this due to happen then it is unfortunate for the buyer.
I wouldn't take it back as these things happen unfortunately.

It actually means "Let the buyer Beware". If the seller deliberately tries to deceive the buyer by doing something to cover up a known problem - for instance if the seller had detected a slight knocking and didn't tell the buyer, then I don't think "sold as seen" is water-tight.

i all honsety i never knew the bottom end was about to go, from what i know there is no tell tale signs letting you know its about to pack in,
i just had a new bottom end fitted at the start of the year with 50k miles on it, cost me near £2k for parts and labour, up untill i last seen the car it was running sweet, pulling like a train with no noise bangs rattles, was very quiet, suppose its just bad luck

I would not engage in ANY correspondence with him -- unless you are prepared to reimburse him/take the car back

It will only prolong the agony for him

Private buyers have few rights --- especially if he took it for a test drive

Happened to me btw, sold my Range Rover, bloke rang me to say broke down on the way home, possible HG failure. I started to speak to him and in an effort to help him spoke to my friend who owns a Range Rover specialist garage – but he said don’t get involved, any communication comes over as an admission of guilt – and gives the buyer the expectation that you will help him.

It can be quite a common trick

fault develops but the buyer can get it fixed cheap say £600 and asks can you go halves !!!

friend has a mechanic who gives a report on it !!!

sold as seen flogged to bits showing off as soon as he bought it ""

He could of walked away from the sale or bought it from a dealer so just Ignore

i had one of my inpreza`s a week before it got "the death knock".

but was running sweet when i test drove it.

And for the week i had it....

I BROKE IT!.... i didnt even considder going back to the P.O!

i ragged it!, learnt my lesson, sccoby dont like prolonged high speed runs!.

Just dont get into it with him.

Car`s bought privatly are sold as seen.

Its crappy luck, i`ve been there!, but nothing you can do to help.

As since its been out of you posesion it could have been constantly ragged.

Who did the rebuild? Did you give receipts for the individual parts used?

It does seem like you've had a bad run with it in the last 2-3 months:

dont go there

his car, his problem

once you start talking warranties it will become your problem -- fine if you intent to sort it out for him, but see post 16

its hard -- but I buy privately and accept the risks

You are covered by the sale of goods act, whether the car was bought privately or from a dealer - this means that unless you've been negligent & the engine failed because it ran out of oil because you didn't check it or similar.
I would sent back
That is just your side of the story. It is easy to say the other person broke it ! but deep down there was a problem before it was sold !! I would pay for anyone to go on a lie detector, it is cheaper than a new engine rebuild
No one seems honest anymore especially with these cars, you have to be careful

Thats what i was trying to get at fella, a recent engine rebuild thats using an excessive ammount of oil goes bang on the new owner...

Did the OP rebuild the engine himself?

Yes in fairness i have had a number of problems with the car, that was half the reason i decided to cut my losses and sell the car, but at the time of the sale the car was running better than it ever had been the whole 2 years i owned it, there was no knocks bangs rattles nothing. The offer i got for the car wasn't any where close to what i spent on getting the engine replaced, so i knocked the buyer back at 1st, then after a good think i thought i might not get an other offer for months and accepted it, dont know if its really good luck for me or really bad luck for buyer.
