Default hesitation / surging / overboost ???

hi all

got a small issue that has a bit of history....here goes

i have a 99 uk turbo earlier this year i lightly modded it (exhaust, intake fuel pump) and then it was remapped by Simon at JGM all was fine.

anyway recently i was losing oil for some reason and to cut a long story short i killed my engine (which already had a fair amount of piston slap anyway and had done 130,000 miles)

i found a 2nd hand 36,000 mile engine and fitted it all is fine with the engine and it sounds great.

anyway that's the background, now here is the problem:
i seem to be getting an issue mainly in 4th and 5th gear at around 80-90 under acceleration its hard to describe but it feels like a cross between hesitation and surging its not major but its enough to annoy me!

my thoughts were maybe overboost as my boost gauge is hitting 1.27 and previously i don't remember is going past 1.2

i was also thinking/hopeing that maybe i need to get simon to tweak my map to suit the new engine.

sorry for the long story, any advise welcome???

thanks

mark

yes you need a remap for the mods on that engine, check your boost solenoid give it a clean with brake cleaner or disconnect it and instal a manual boost controller and turn it down to the 1.2 bar mark where it was remapped to, could also chack your turbos acutater see if its in working order, but with changing engine the ecu may not recognise the new changes and finding it hard to take it whats going on, best thing to do is get it remapped again for the mods on the new engine, but for now dont drive it hard or on alot of boost you may cause damage, just to be sure check all boost hoses are in place and not damaged or blocked.

a side issue..i have read about the restrictor pill, on a 99 it should be in the pipe from the t-piece that goes to the inter cooler, is that right?

If your engine is the same as the one that you replaced then there should be no need to tweak the map, the ecu will control it just as it did with the previous unit (hence all manufacturer's ecu's are the same for the same model, ie focus 1.6 has the same ecu/map as one of the same year).
You no doubt have another underlying issue, the car is overboosting for some reason and thats what you have to find out, its either because something else has changed (exhaust or filter?) or your boost solenoid is getting clogged.

i had a bit of an issue when removing my old engine, basically the vacuum hoses from the turbo and actuator were brittle and on snapped when i tried to remove it(see pic attached).

then when trying to repair the problem the t piece broke!

i brought another 3mm t-piece from halfords and as far as the broken pipe goes i joined it back together with a 3mm joiner.

are all the hoses 3mm?

was out there last night in the pi$$ing down of rain checking them all! cleaned out the hoses and the solenoid with brake cleaner.

has made a small difference now peaking at 1.24

might just buy a manual boost controller, that would install on the hose were the restrictor pill is wouldn't it?

When you cleaned the solenoid did you put it in test mode? I.E connect the two black connectors under the dash together

It makes the solenoid pulse and flushes out the crap. i had the same problem on mine and this did the trick.

i have checked mine
if you look at the picture on page 3
i dont have the t piece (might have something to do with having a 3 port and not a 2 port as pictured)

the pipe coming from the turbo goes to the bottom of the 3 port and the pipe coming from the wastegate goes straight to the top of the 3 port
but i dont have a pill in either pipe as its still in the old bit of pipe

is this right ??
if not do i need to put the pill back in and if so which pipe the one from the turbo to the 3 port or the one from the wastegate ?

cheers phil

oops the pm's i sent can you just ignore me as i have just read page 15 and its answered my questions
