WRX insured as GL??
Ive found a WRX but its a GL on the logbook and obvisoly the insurance is void if you crash, however if i tell them it has a non standard engine in and insure it as a GL that way is that ok?

If it's definately a GL just with a WRX engine in then contact the insurance company....get them to do a registration check for you...if it still comes back as a GL then you would probably have to contact the DVLA to get them to check if any changes/notifications have been told to them. Personally I'd walk away, get a WRX instead. Even with the WRX engine in the GL it's still not a WRX...have they uprated or changed brakes, suspension etc to suit? doubt it. Goodluck with that.

I have seen a sunroof on a WRX before but it is rare as I've only seen the one . If the registration comes up as GL then I'd ring the DVLA on Monday just to check with them what they think you need to do(might need examining & new log book). If you insure that as a GL (with normal bhp level)then your only asking for trouble especially if the worst happens for whatever reason and they find out it has a turboed engine with almost double (if not more) the amount of horsepower the standard GL has.
I think if you wanted to insure it legally you would have to tell them that it's a GL with a modified engine. Some companies will be fine with this and just want to know all the engine specifics before insuring you and probably charge you a lot more whereas others will flat refuse to insure you. Some were registered as GL's, most were WRX's incorrectly registered, check the chassis number to see what car it is
Tony
PS you can get wrx's with sunroofs same as uk turbo's with sun roofs

my last 95 wrx had a sunroof. it was an import. a lot of imports are registered as gl. my 93 wrx is registered as impreza r. i have insured it as a wrx though.
post up the model code on the vin plate? that will tell you if its a wrx or a gl.
if it is a wrx....do the right thing.

Yeah, 10 years ago when i had my 93 WRX, the log book stated 'GL'. I still insured it as a WRX. You would be stupid to insure a WRX as a GL just because thats whats on the log book. People do it, and thats up to them, but you may as well drive without insurance (which I would not recommend!) If you have a crash the poop will hit the turbine.

No you crash, the insurance company look at the car. See its a wrx not a GL and you get nothing.

As already stated, it's probably a WRX that has been incorrectly registered by the DVLA as a GL.
Same happened when I imported my 93 WRX - logbook came back stating that it was a GL. However, it has always been insured as a WRX and I had the logbook changed when I moved house (included a brief covering letter when I returned the V5).
Only certain way to know is to check the model code on the VIN plate. There are probably still loads of WRXs registered as GLs in this country - hopefully they're all insured as WRXs though?!?

Yip, as others have said. You give the insurance companies any wrong information and you are not insured. Simple as that. Although I'm not saying I've never not declared a few mods...

You have their certificate, they indemnify you, no matter what theyd have you believe. Whether they then sue you for their losses is another matter.
If they use the registered number then itll come up as a GL, if thats how it was registered (as many were: you have to be very careful when you complete the forms and then take it up with the VRO if it comes back incorrectly described: most importers dont bother). If youre dealing with a callcentre then you may well struggle to get someone to accept what youre saying (as you explain), let alone understand your explanation, so youll need to confirm everything in writing. Youll be better off with a broker who understands...

Insure it for what it is. No savings to be made by lying. Main question to ask would be how it is making 300bhp+ when it left the factory with 240bhp. Maybe another 'add a dumpvalve, that gives it at least 60bhp' type of seller, or maybe it has more going on under the bonnet than he is listing. I'd also check to see if it is an STI, rather than a WRX with extras. A 1993 WRX probably isn't worth 3K in todays market. Seen 1999 cars that are well modded selling for that.
