Default trouble starting car

hi i have a uk turbo 2000 1998 went to the shop round the corner and engine light came on turned the car off plugged the green and black plugs in and no code came up engine light just stayed on unplugged them and tryed starting it wouldnt start so i pumped the accelerater and it started and a load of black smoke out of the exhaust but sounded like it wanted to cut out again so i reved it up and it was fine.now every time i want to start it i have to pump the accelerater thought it might of been something to do with not getting any fuel but once started its o.k its just getting the thing to start any ideas

Its possible you may have reset the ECU. Scoobypedia | Trusted knowledge for everything Subaru | Knowledge / ECU Reset
To read the codes you only connect the black connectors, and not the greens:
Scoobypedia | Trusted knowledge for everything Subaru | Knowledge / Reading ECU Fault Codes

If you have reset the ecu, then the ecu is now learning the car again. So if you had a faulty MAF, the ECU would have gradually compensated for it to keep it running. Now its reset, the ECU being fresh just sees a faulty MAF.

ITs just a possibilty.
