my advice would be...
don't rush into buying and try to buy with your head and not your heart.
and 3 more things...
1) service history
2) service history
3) service history
what i am trying to say is regular servicing is a must particularly on a modified scooby
and welcome

interim service (oil change and general checks) should have been done every 6500 miles, check the service book and to be sure make a few calls and see if the garage where the services were done can verify.
4k is probably about right for that year with the bhp they claim (do the have documented proof of bhp?)
as far as i am aware the only official special edition in 1999 was the RB5

What kind of mods should be involved with getting that power?

400 bhp would need a fair few mods and tbh i would have expected him to list them on the advert but all he mentions is a bigger turbo and a dump valve.
i personally would be a bit skeptical about the 400bhp claim, reason being for that sort of power you would normally have a front mount inter cooler which i cant obviously see from the pics.
i think you need to get a bit more info from the guy.

I don't recognise the car or the name from Cumbrian scoobs. Try posting on the cumbrianscoobs website for info.

It does not look like a catalunya (the only black special edition IMHO) and as for running 400BHP............ *shrugs shoulders*

Lets point out why I wouldnt touch it with a barge pole.
Red line at 7500, STI's are 7900 (and it should have STI on the instrument display) so either changed or its not what it seems)
Mid level spoiler, V5 cars are high level
No FMIC or by the looks uprated top mount, rather necessary for a 400bhp classic
Steering wheel.... more like 180k miles rather than 80k, and not red stitching which you get on STI's
Wrong interior.
No mention of service history, and on the standard brakes..... riiiiiiiiiiiiight (note they are not 4 pot subaru brakes but 2 pots)
That should put me off for life

in conclusion mate..... don't buy it, hold out and get a genuinely 'loved' scooby
here is a link to a spec data sheet that you might find useful
Subaru Impreza Specifications
and if they say its 400bhp ask to see the list (and i mean list) of all the mods that the car has.
the sti of this year was 280bhp standard, so to add 120 bhp would need more than a big turbo and a dump valve
PS. midlife.... catalunya was 1997 and was a UK car not a jap. so your right its not one of them

Thats a Standard V5 WRX. Cant comment on the engine work. Black and yellow seats, 7.5k redline (sti 8k) crap 2 pot brakes. I know iv got one. But brakes and seats have been changed on mine, along with a lot more. V5 wrx is a good quick car, rated at the same 276bhp as the sti and only slighty down on torque but as said its not a sti.
