You should get a nice example for that mate, just hold on for the right one and veiw/drive a few first. Try to get one with full service history too, and check for knocking struts as this is a common problem on these models.

i paid £10,500 or a 53reg sti ppp with 25,000miles fssh
its a bit over priced untill you see it, it aint got a dent on it never had paint work and all the prodrive suspension goodies, plus the woman owner had only just changed the tyres! had to go to wales for it but, well chuffed i looked about, before buying a later model with higher mileage and not looking as clean!
you can pick one up for the price your looking for no probs

what are the common faults on these car?
How to notice these problems and to stay away from them?
What are the normal repair costs of the common problems?
Also read some threads but like to get as much advise before I buy

Look long and hard, take note of how long the car has been for sale, remember that modified cars are difficult to sell and their sellers get desperate, JDM cars have a limited market too and in the current economic climate you might get a bargain. Someone I know recently bought an 05 JDM STi in sexy white for £8.5k Don't get giddy and you might find something similar
If you can stretch to an 05 car then you will benefit from having DCCD-A (better centre diff) and revised suspension geometry (as Spec C), along with better dampers, and IIRC HID headlights and sweep dials. JDM cars always had the DCCD-A, better lights and dials, along with higher spec engines, turbo's (twin scroll) and exhausts to have more power over more of the rev-range, but as with UK cars the better geometry came along in 05.

I might be able to point you at a 2003(53) Litchfield Type20 JDM STi close to your price range if you're interested. This car benefits from the usual JDM spec I mentioned above, but also has the Litchfield/Powerstation handling and performance upgrades consisting of Milltek exhaust and remap bringing power to 320/330, and AST coilovers with Whiteline ARB's and ALK allied to a superb geometry set-up. In my opinion, these are near the best road-driving Impreza's you can get. Let me know and I'll point the owner in your direction.

It is indeed a JDM import. IIRC it was a late 03 spec car which wasn't registered in Japan until Iain Litchfield bought it and brought it over in 2005, wherein it was fettled by him and Powerstation into a Type 20. I think it has 43k on the clock now.

Any price would be his concern. I have PM'd him a link to this thread Contact A-Plan and Keith Michaels regarding insurance, you might get a pleasant surprise.

The car was owned by a very good friend of mine for many years. He never tracked it, much to my disgust. As a mature driving enthusiast it was driven fast, but with mechanical sympathy and to my knowledge never missed a beat. It was serviced religiously and cared for meticulously. He traded it against a BMW 335D when the car started to look out of place in the company car park given his promoted work position, and for family reasons, and the new owner is another friend of mine whom rarely drives it, rather spending time polishing it for photographs. Trust me, if I were in the market it would be near the top of my list. Apart from it not being a Hawkeye model, and maybe it not being white, it would be the perfect Scoob for me. I have driven it on several occasions and it has a supreme balance of power and handling. It might not be the most powerful STi on Scoobynet, but it would run rings around many of the silly power cars on UK roads through its awesome control.

I know a guy selling a Hawkeye, but it's a bit over your budget.....

Cheers for the heads up Dave. The Type20 above is mine, not actually advertised for sale anywhere, but it is available. Drop me a PM and I can sort out any pics you need and full details etc.
Think Dave covered most of it above, power wise its running 330/335.
Regards insurance, this actually worked out cheaper to insure than a modded UK STi with all the same bits on . . .

If you click on his name there should be a drop-down menu appears with the option to 'Send white scooby a private message'.
Alternatively, CLICK HERE
Or you when in your UserCP (Control Panel) in the column to the left there is the option under 'Private Messaging' to 'Send a new message' where you would need to enter his user-name (must be perfect, copy'n'paste ). Or on the top right of every page you are on you can access your messages where it says 'Welcome donmojo, you last visited...... Private Messages'
