help, i want more air flow??
i have a K&N induction kit with a K&N cone filter on my 99.
the cone is directly underneath the mesh looking bonnet vent.
if i take of the metal off underneath the vent leaving just the mesh vent itself this will allow more air directly onto the cone but will also expose that part of my engine bay and the filter to rain etc.
do you think doing this will be a problem?
how else can i get more air flow to the filter?
information and experiences appreciated

Did JGM not say you'd be better off with the standard airbox when he mapped it? I think induction kits are only any good after 300bhp and that if you can sheild it from the heat.
Anyway to answer your question, you can by a mini scoop to replace the vent. Or get some morettes and take out the inner lens and use as an air feed.

I would have thought that at speed the air would just pass over the bonnet and not go down through the mesh to your filter. I would be tempted to with something more like this. I would also be worried like you say that when you are not using the car the rain would go directly onto the filter.

The vents as they are more for letting out the engine temps, don't think they are for air intake at all. You won't be able to do it with out changing something on the bonnet.
You should look at getting a standard airbox and a dedent panel filter. The MAF is weak on your year anyway, so an induction kit like K and N is no good for you.

You are only drawing in warm underbonnet air and you know this, its why you want to open the vent. As said the only use for a cone is at high bhp with a fmic. You need nice, bhp inducing cold dense air that you will get from the OE box and a KnN or Green panel

Removing the blanking plate will only increase your intake temp as you are drawing hot air from your turbo/exhaust area right past your cone. As the MY99 maf is delicate to start with i would be worried about the cone getting wet!

Refit OE airbox, for maf and colder air's sake
remove the snorkel and resonator box and build an air pipe/hose from the foglight or similar.
You could open up the intake side to the airbox, the rubber seal is kind of restrictive, see below. And the opening in the wing is bigger than the rubber seal surround. (on pic it's trimmed to fit opening in the wing.)
