Default Does this look right....?

There is a classic STi on Autotrader advertised with very low mileage:

Auto Trader UK - SUBARU IMPREZA WRX STi ++FRESH IMPORT++ONLY 24,000 MILES++JUST IN++

It's claiming the 24,000 miles are proven by a 'mileage certificate'. The engine bay and interior certainly look clean, does anyone have any exerience of these Japanese certificates, and if they can be relied on?

Also, how can you tell it really has ABS, other than slamming the anchors on?

Thanks! (Sorry if the link doesn't come out right)

Ok 1st off the mileage I am not convinced with! 2nd the ABS is simple! Shove your head underneath and look for the ABS cables on the front!

Forgive my ignorance.... How will I know the ABS cables when I see them?

Does look nice and clean alround mate but 24k thats mighty low I have no direct experience with 'mileage certs' but have read that they not worth the paper they come on. ABS pump i think is located behind the o/s headlight and is obvious by the brake pipes coming from it. Go have i look it can't hurt

I wish I could go and have a look but it will be the summer before I have the money *sigh*. Maybe prices will have dropped a bit by then!

Thanks for the help on the ABS guys.

If its a BIMTA certificate it confirms the odometer reading when the car was auctioned. Not certain, but likely: presuming that the car was sold by a Jap. That said the mileage is low, even for a Southern city car. Northern Honshu cars tend to travel just as far as ours do.

Also: STIs do have ABS; youre confusing them with WRX STI Type-RAs, which dont as it wont function with the DCCD.

GC8, thanks for the help. I thought ABS was only an option on classic STi's, like on classic WRX's?

Whether its an option I cant say for certain. I can state that every car I imported had it fitted and Ive always assumed that it was a standard feature. It was only deleted from the STI Type-RAs because it wouldnt work properly with the DCCD and it was re-instated in the New Age cars with DCCD-A and more modern ABS.

Looks fairly genuine but what's going on with the bonnet? It looks a totally different colour - or is it just my googly eyes

I see what you mean, but I think it's just that is was photographed in very bad light. You'd think they would try to get some snaps in better conditions.

Looking at the paint on the inlet manifold, either its genuine mileage but has been driven a little hard maybe, or the mileage is higher and has been driven normally lol

Its not impossible to find low mileage imprezas in Japan, but that mileage and price seem a little suspicious... could be genuine though...

Go have a look, test drive, then you will have a better idea

sKunk, I agree about the eyebrows - they would go!

From the pictures I have seen of cars for sale, I am yet to see one where the red paint has survived, presumably it starts to peel off pretty quickly.

Well, I have seen many stis here in Japan, and have seen some pretty high mileage sti's with quite a lot of the paint still intact... I can only assume its more of a temperature thing... So if the engine has been run hard, it might peel off quicker.... run sensibly, and quite a lot of the paint is still intact...

The engine has probably been washed lots with a jet wash, that would take the paint off, the clutch pedal looks like it has lots of tread on it, though they can be changed, its normally the seats, steering wheel and gear stick that give alot away, and the floor carpet if its not had a mat there, you would have to see the car in the flesh to assess it really.

i dont think that there are many people who actually jet wash the engine here in Japan or the UK..... Altho the engine bay does look pretty damn clean..

Could be genuine

my mate had the same trouble with one of his cars he was selling he bought a car from new had it a couple of years and he had drove a couple of thousand miles in it over the years ,he only drives to asda and back on a friday and the odd newcastle game .
he came to sell it and no one believed him that the mileage was genuine and had to sell it for less than he wanted to so people would come and look at it .

STi's only had ABS as an option.. It was either ABS or intercooler spray, you couldnt have both as the ABS pump sits where the ic spay bottle sits
