You could have a go at co-driving as a cheap way of rallying but if you want to drive I'd suggest buying a ready to run car is the cheapest method. Stripping out a car is a great idea but in reality will cost you lots more in time & money. Some good options on motorsport ads and on pistonheads for a reasonable budget. Get your competition licence and do a few single venue events to get your eye in so to speak.
But as with any motorsport 'cheap' is a realtive phrase and your car WILL become a money pit.

Good Luck though

join a local motor club (msa website has links) and start doing road rallys, my first road rally cost me £70 entry! i nicked my wifes run-a-bout to do it and i went from there the biggest trick is to get someone who can read OS maps in the seat next to you. some road rallys are closed to club so you dont even need a comp licence to start with

Quick word to the wise if you decide to go down an organised route such as sprints/hillclimbs/racing etc make sure you decide what class and type of car you need/want BEFORE you go stripping it and making it fall outside of the class regulations. A lot of entry level motorsport requires all the trims etc to be left in and only allows mods to engine, brakes etc. Worth reading some of the local regs for events you might want to enter to get an idea.

Are road rallies any fun now (or since you stopped hooning about)? Id consider sprinting or karting. beyond that everything is very expensive. Single stage rallies will be the cheapest Id have thought, or a limited championship like the 205 one, but even then the costs will go way beyond the £3,000-odd youll need for an OK car...

Default offroad racing.

Hi crf450r
If you want a cheap form of offroad racing checkout www.national-autograss.co.uk you mentioned stripping out a saxo or nova type small hatch that would be a nasa class 2 car, obviously there are rules to abide to safety aswell as car spec. I raced both in class 3 and class 7 on and off over a period of 16 years my wife also raced my last 2 cars until I got her pregnant (that slowed her down lol ). Anyway I`d recommend checking it out it teaches excellent car control which helps no end on the road with the driving conditions we`ve had this week. There are clubs all over the uk inc. Ireland but not Scotland don`t know why.

Phil739 you mentioned autograss have you or do you particapate?

Oh by the way I`d recommend buying a car rather than building a first one there is usually a few on ebay.

Default autograss

Phil739 checkout the link on my previous post if i can answer any questions I will.
crf450r I had years of enjoyment and yes it is highly addictive. I still race anything with 4 wheels and an engine whenever I get a chance mind you never on the road too many people going the wrong way .
The Autograss season starts around march and lasts till sept. oct. time.
Check out a local club meeting and see what its all about before rushing out and buying a car. If you let me know your area I might know of a club close by. Or if you are dead set on buying a car I still have a lot of good friends and contacts within the sport.

phil739 on the autograss website click on venue then england then east midlands and you`ll see your local club is at shepshed. If you have`nt done that already of course. You don`t have to join the nearest club to you. You might want to visit a few first and you don`t have to be a member every race meeting is open to the public for a small entrance fee. You only have to join a club if you was to start racing.

Default autograss

Phil739 yes you do need a licence to race but these are issued by Nasa the autograss organisers not the spaceship people. When I last raced you only had to send off for it there was no ards type exam or anything. Your choice of club would be able to advise.
Autograss is cheap to take part in as in entering race meetings as a driver Your major expense is how much you choose to spend on a car and then the running expenses tyres are cheap and can be bought from autograss suppliers.
My club chairman supplies parts to autograssers and is one of the most helpful & friendly person I have ever met his website is www.bpgrassing.co.uk & his name is Dave Robins.
Go for it you only live once.

Dave Robins is the best person to speak to about a class one or two - he has built loads of class ones in the years I've known him and both him and his 18 year old son were in the finals for class one at the National Autograss Championships - with the son coming 2nd - thats the top 10 drivers / cars in the country!

He is bound to know of any that are for sale for either class and is extremely helpful & knowledgeable.

There is also a publication by Jeffrey Parrish called Autograss Review - www.autograss.net/AutograssReview/ - which runs both car and spares ads all year - there is a subscription link and I think it is £25 for ten issues - it is a good starting poiint.

If you speak to Dave at BP Grassing mention Simon & Hilary gave you his details and you are interested in getting into Grassing. It has becomie a full time job for him selling spares, cars etc, so if you get his number of the BP grassing site you can call him anytime (almost!)

Good luck & let me know how you get on - if you have any other questions please ask.....

Some road rallies now are basically stage rallies run to road rally regs, like the Twilight in Wales, which have most of its mileage in forests & militery private ground, although cars are to road rally spec, a very good event without anything coming the other way ? with a very cheap entry.

Sounds interesting, although I wouldnt like to take a 'road rally' car into a forest satge: how do they survive? Id have thought that something like an airfield stage rally would have been more suitable?
