Default Helmets for trackdays

Am going to start doing a few track days this year and was hoping someone could give me some advice re helmets for track days - not sure what make or model to go for and what sort of price I should be looking at...

Any advice gratefully received!

You can never spend too much to protect your head BUT

If your driving a normal car then ANY good Gold Label Helmet will be more than sufficent

Bought mine of ebay. Has all of the correct marking comes in a nice bag and even fit my mahooosive head. Only buy brand new of course. Paid £20 I seem to remember (wanted scooby blue but no stock) and when compared side by side with my mates £200 helmet frankly bar a couple of air holes there was no difference even he was impressed ..... or was that depressed at the price!

I usually mock people on PH and Porsche forums who talk boll*cks about fireproof limings and how car shells are massively different (they arent and a nomex lining makes no difference to anything), but Im not sure that Id want a £20 Chinese helmet.

LOL

Fair point but frankly they are rated to the same standards (german and UK) so they can't be all that bad!

If I was riding a bike and using one every day then I could justify £200 but I'd rather spend the extra £180 on other things considering the number of times a year my helmet will get used!

you pays you money, but you can end up looking like a right peanut in a standard road car wearing your jeans and t-shirt with a £400 arai on though.

I understand that and as long as you dont have a rollcage and the helmets not too heavy.

The bottom line is that for national motorsport in the UK, you need a BS Type A helmet and nothing more. You only need a Type A / Fireproof for international motorsports events.

To be fair my biggest problem was trying to find one to fit I think my nut worked out as xxxl which was a **** bag to find. The biggest prob is most shells are the same size with just less and less padding ! Any bigger though and I wouldn't have been able to sit up in my car ... and that's without a roll cage!

Exactly! Thats why youre better off with a Shoei or an Arai because they make different shell sizes.

Before you buy - go to a bike shop or similar and try a few lids on, you will be suprised the difference in fit for a given size.

Full or open face helmet ???

I am just about to buy one, I know the full face will be safer but the open face will be more comfortable.

Don't fancy chinning the steering wheel, I reckon it's harder than me !!!!

Good question. I always assume open face would be better for visibiliy. Problem is. as jimmy car put it. i look like a fat kid stuck int he doors of a lift....

Will a full face helmet be alright with an air bag?

I think it depends on your cars setup......ie with no airbag/decent cage and fixed back seats correctly mounted and 5/6 point harness install the need for a full face helmet is pointless....... but with standard seats, and belts i think a full face may suit better.

I didn't find full face affected visibility at all only the side but that would be the same as op;en face I guess!
