Default Can i tow a Subaru Impreza ?

I need to move a mates Subaru 9 miles so instead of having the hassle of getting the trailer out can I just whip it onto a towing bar and tow out of gear ??

The reason I ask is due tot he 4x4 ?

Cheers!

I would think it would be ok as long as all four wheels are on the ground.
You certainly would not be able to tow by lifting the fronts

Enough people have been towed out the kitty litter at various tracks and they do fit towing eyes after all

wouldnt tow over 30 mph and further than 30 miles.....
as long as all wheels on the ground....
use the trailer mate...towing at that speed will take half a day!!

Of course, how is towing out of gear (with all four wheels on the ground) any different to coasting down a long hill?

yeah NEVER tow with just two wheels. i found a invoice when i brought my car from the AA for the replacement of a rear diff and gearbox strip down, due to being towed on two wheels.

Not sure what the differentials are like on a subaru but many cars with LSDs do not like towing, for one no oil pumps will be working as engine is off etc.

well if the engine isnt on then the oil pump wont be on, but the engine has no need for oil so thats not really an issue.

Totally agree.

The issue with towing is when 2 wheels are stationary and the centre diff, which only allows a limited amount of slip (model dependant), is over worked. This then puts pressure on both fron and rear diffs.

NO issues FLAT towing a subaru! As stated above do not front/rear lift! But yeah it'll take half the time for only 9 miles just brake!!

Anyways decided to and get the trailer. as the whole reason for the towing is it has no front brakes so a towing bar would not of worked anyways.

The car is for sale in the next few weeks with a fresh 12 months mot and once the 4 pots are put back on, (It had 6 pots on but had to give them back!) so if anyone is interested then let me knows?? and yes its a private plate and a TYPE RA lol

Here is a few piccys.

Just checked manual for UK MY97 Classic. It says

Towing a manual AWD turbo ok but reminds you that there will be no power assistance for braking or steering, (so get Arnold Swarzenegger to pilot the towed vehicle)

Also reminds you to put the ignition key in and turn it to the acc position. For information on what happens if you don't do this see here
YouTube - WRX CRASH INTO WIRE POLE BEING TOWED SHORT VER

Towing the auto version ok, but only up to 6 miles.

In either instance towing should be done on all four wheels, never two.

None of this info any use to you at all as
a) you have already done the job
b) it didn't have any braking system any way

Pretty motor, looks familiar, did it used to live in Pidley?

It's quick all right, went past me going up the hill from Somersham Road like I was stood still.

Had a seized front right caliper slowing me down in my mitigation, since changed to four pots.

No mitigation whatsoever!!

2 pots, if that's what you had, would not stop a cat.....even if siezed!!

Only kidding!

Yip.

If the box is scrap, you'll most likely have to keep your foot on the clutch though.

LOL
I can assure you that the humble 2 pot may not be very good at repeatably stopping a Scoob being driven hard, but seized and with a warped disc banging away they can completely screw what little acceleration a standard UK classic has.

Have to agree that the 4 pots make a world of difference tho.
Especially when not seized

sorry fella, you on drugs or summat

thought some 1 with 10k+ posts might actually know what there on about

oil pumps don't feed the gearbox or diff they have their own sumps

Hence saying "not sure about subaru's".....

just posted the question more than anything in case. Many cars should not be towed due to LSDs etc. some have their own pumps and so on.

Of course I'm not saying that he engine oil pump would feed the diff but anyone, even with 150 posts, would know I'm not saying that

Didn't notice I'd hit the 10,000 post mark!! wahay
