td05 18g

Yes, but if you think about using the car properly then the WRX gearbox WILL break with an 18G fitted with supporting mods and mapped to suit.
IMO, you'd even be pushing your luck with a TD05 16G on the poop 5-spd box.
Cheers,
Grant

Yea that would definitely be safer than the 18g option.
However, if I had a WRX and was wanting more than the 'normal' stage 1 power level then I'd be looking into one of Andy Forrests Hybrid TD04 turbos... have seen pretty good reviews on them, might make slightly less headline power than the VF STi turbos but I'm sure that a test in Jap Performance Mag or Banzai showed that they are a serious alternative, quite new out though, so probably have to look at buying new from Andy direct.
Cheers,
Grant

This is my next step and after talking to duncan at Hypertech he have recommend i use a TD05 18g with supporting mods ie,injectors, sti top mount, decat up pipe, air flow delete elbow& reflash by Andy F who did my first map.
Both Duncan & Andy F say the gear box should be fine!

Hmmmm, those are two guys that really know their stuff.... I'm just going by what I've seen other people do to the 5-spd box when they've fired on TD05s.
If you arent into 1/4 mile or serious backroad or track work then I'm sure it'll hold out for a wee while without hassle... but then if you arent into those things then why would you be wanting to fit a 350bhp+ turbo.
Cheers,
Grant

Seems i may have to look into this abit further!
Im the same as you Powerwrx as im running 283bhp with the td04 which Andy F says are only good for a safe 285bhp!
Think i may be looking for vf35 as is fitted on the WR1 then!

High Flow multi spray fuel injectors 550cc (380cc as std)
Uprated turbo to intercooler 'Y' pipe
NGK PFR 7B uprated spark plugs
Level 2(a) 300-320 bhp
Substitute VF34/35 or TD05-16G turbo in place of AFP04H for additional 10-20bhp but with slightly later turbo spool up.
Level 3 360-390 bhp
Full Decat turbo back 3” bore exhaust system
Tubular exhaust headers and flow matched uppipe
Walbro 255 l/hr uprated fuel pump
K+N panel filter
EcuTek custom ECU calibration.

Level 3 Power may shorten the life of the transmission system this will depend on use and driving style. The 01 onwards UK 5 speeds do currently seem to be coping well with this level of output although as mileage increases this may become more of an issue.

I ran an 18G on my 2003 2.0 WRX and it made 355bhp on Powerstation's rollers. Mapped by Andy F. No problems at all (until the big end bearings went, but then they all do eventually when you hit this level).

Hi Martin
I run an 18G from Deadbolt (from AFP) on my bugeye at a shade over 400 BHP on my bugeye WRX with water / methanol injection plus a few other mods including a Jap 6 speed gearbox
TBH I had a lot more fun from my old TD05 16G set up at about 325 BHP and a shade under 300 Torque...
I never thought the car was going to kill me or break something LOL

thanks for all the replies-i have been at in laws with wife and kids so would be a bit rude to ask to borrow his computer to log on to scoobynet lol
plan is murtaya =1996 wrx with 1997 type r gearbox/diffs so gearbox should be strong enough ...
at moment on simtek running 290bhp but IF i want more just wondering re turbos so now more choices realistically looking at mid 350's with good response as any more i mays well go for a 2.5

I'll be upping the graph soon of my run on the rollers. You'll see how quick the 18g responds then. Got positive comments (and surprised) about how quick it spools.
Makes for a rapid road car.
LOL @ Midlife; I know what you mean. It's a seat of the pants drive. That's probably why i just pottle around, because when you press the loud pedal, you better be ready.
