Is it really anti-lag though: or is it a bit of spitting popping mapped in?

I think if it was "proper" anti lag, some nice company that overhauled turbochargers would be your best friend
Personally, I see no benefit of anti lag on any road car.

Would be nice to find out.

I'm considering a Simtek (not just for the ALS) and just wanted to know whether it sounds any different to the current PnB i have mapped in.

AFAIK its not actually ALS. It is just some loud pops and bangs.

I've asked this before as I want the pops and bangs on my next subaru.

I'm reliably informed the Simtek can be mapped with or without pops and bangs. Sometimes it's easier to get / get rid of them, but it's just a mapping thing. Distinctly different to the sound and operation of anti-lag.

So it would be a switchable version of what i have, not "real" ALS, like the cosworth and what i've grown up listening to in the forests.

I asked this in another thread however i think this one will be more appropriate.

What other ecu's allow cosmetic als? It was mentioned any ECU can be mapped wrong to produce the pops n bangs, however i would really want it switchable. I love the sound but i doubt my neighbours would be to happy when i drive to work in the mornings

Just dip the clutch or shift early.

You will have to force it when it's cold, so don't worry about leaving early in the morning. It's coming back late at night.

I think any duel map ecu will handle it.

It's a Simtek ecu with the AL option - not the real AL of course.

I would have spent the money on a front anti roll bar had I Know the difference it makes.

It runs something like 5 psi off boost. I don't know many people who can afford to run the real deal.

I had anti lag on my old Evo 6 RSX using Autronics Ecu. Dont get me wrong its a laugh at first, but once the novelty wheres off you never use it .

Ive seen you can use anti lag when you get your standard Ecu mapped using Ecutek, Not 100% sure if its available with Subaru's but im sure it can be done on Evo's as ive seen a few cars with it havent seen it on Impreza's yet but im sure someone can clarify if it can be done, But you cant turn it on and off like some of the aftermarket ecu's like Gems/Autronics/Motec etc, so that could be a bit of pain if a police car was behind you or you coming back from work at 3am in the morning!!!!!!

Yeah that's mine. The AL is a bit of a gimmick to be honest - good for a laugh but that's about it.

You can switch it on and off but to honest I never use it that much. I think it gives something like 3 psi when the throttle is shut or so I was told.

My advise would be if you can afford to waste 150 quid then get it, if not spent it on other go faster bits.

The SimTek can be mapped with whatever form of antilag you want, pops and bangs all the way to full on jacked open throttle or throttle kicker antilag.
Bare in mind though with the latter you will lose servo assistance under braking and your turbo life will be reduced.

My offering.

Full on antilag utilising a electronically operated throttle kicker activated by a switch.

An electronically driven solenoid used to partialy open the throttle when switched on, this is reqd to get the amount of airflow reqd to make positive boost at idle.
The other method is to jack open the throttle using the throttle stop or a seperate cable connected to the extra take off at the manifold end.
