Default top speed uk my97

hi all im not expecting a rapid response due to how slow site is running at present.but the car isnt being driven untill questions are answered just in case.
so here goes, supposing i have a friend who on a private piece of road managed to get around 140mph out of his impreza, and then a few weeks later his gearbox gave up and had to have a rebuild on it,for the rebuild he had to have a third gear fitted to repair it,and that gear came from a wrx import ans was fitted into a uk spec.and then the car drove fine, however when he visited the private land again his top mph was only 120! coulod this be down to the new gear that was fitted or is it likely to be some other problem?

As it was only third gear that was changed, must be something else.

The speedo is run off the gearbox, is all this connected back up ok? it will have been disconnected when the gear work was done.

Sounds to me like the whole import unit has been put in.

Is there be any serial numbers on the casing that could help?

i will get back to you in a while on the rpm as far as i am aware it was only third gear changed.due to the box they had being different ratios.

dan the unit that was going to be fitted was a wrx recon that had 11000 miles on it.however i was told that mine being uk the ratios where different and i would need to do the rear diff aswell money was an issue at the time as it swallowed a lot of it just for the box to be replaced.he told me he had 2 old gearboxes that 1 had smashed case (it did) and the other had lost reverse so the gear was taken from that one.
thanks for the help guys it is gladly received.

Not sure about the WRX gearing but that's about right for a UK model, if it won't pull above that then there's some other non-gearbox (probably engine) related problem, needs looking at ASAP I would suggest.

A WRX gearset would be approx 20mph/1000rpm ballpark (my 1995 was)

120mph was at 6000rpm
