Default Impreza fast road/track car project

Hi all, for the last few months I've been weighing up the options for building a track car for next year. When I say build I mean buy a road going scooby, and strip down, and replace with after market bits - not starting from scratch i.e buy a shell and do things that way.

My problem is that I would probably go for something roughly the same age as my Terzo: so anything between 97 and 00. But my budget would only be maybe 4-5k for the car, as I don't see the point in spending loads when I will be replacing most things anyway. However I also want a very tidy, well looked after car.

These just don't seem to exist! I've looked on pistonheads, and for my budget there seems to be alot of sheds going about at that price with chavy owners(you can tell by their poor use of english in the ads, and the fact that they don't know what they're talking about when describing their own cars).

I thought the credit crunch was meant to be hitting hard! I was even planning on selling my car for somewhere in the region of 4k, and it is mint and has no expense spared on it...maintained religiously etc etc.

Can anybody point me in the direction of some decent cars(say for instance a MY98 Sti) in the region of 4-5k? I would also appreciate opinions from anyone that's done the same as I'm planning on doing?

Should also mention that even though I plan on using it on track, it will still be very well looked after and probably used on the road.

All opinions welcome
Alan

Probably too far for you to travel, and maybe a bit older than you were looking for, but this is worth a look....

I would be prepared to travel if I found the right car to be honest. That is exactly the kind of car I'm looking for condition wise, although I'd be prepared to spend a bit more and have a newer, facelifted version.

Another problem I will have will be insuring it if I modify it the way I intend to. You will probably have me on the phone in december when my renewal is due...hope you can quote me happy.

I'm 21. Will have 4 years ncb on renewal all going well.

If insurance is a problem with the modifications that will be done, it will only be used on track.

You will just have to keep searching, I found exactly the same 18mths ago when looking for mine.
In the end I found a 95 WRX about 25 miles away from me. It was up for an advertised £4k at a dealer, I got it for £3k in the end after haggling.
Best of all it had only a stainless back box on it. LOL

I've modified only the bare minimum to keep performance to cost ratios good.

Suspension - KYB's, 25rear and 22 front ARB's.
Brakes - Gold Brembo's.
Power - 3" S/Steel straight through V4 I/C and polar chip.
Gearbox - Late model box as I stripped 3RD on the std one........

Thats about it tbh, it runs great and look pretty much std

I've left the interior because at some point I will want to sell and in my view although a stripped car is best for the track I dont think you would sell it on very easy come the inevitable change.

They are good effective mods you have done. I will be taking mine a bit further performance wise: will be adding bits to it all winter while it's garaged, then taking it to Andy F in the spring for mapping when it's finished. Would be hoping for 350+bhp.

I know what you mean about the stripping out - but you can always stick it back in when it comes to selling.

That's some impressive haggling btw, it's amazing what kind of discount you can get from a desperate dealer! They hate things like Imprezas as they find them hard to shift.

It was an import specialist!!!!

I asked him what his best deal was, but he made the mistaken of asking me to give him my best offer. LOL
Its amazing what they will do when you start walking.

To date my best lap is 1.54min around Cadwell on crap Fedral tyres and std roll bars. I cant wait until next year now.

I'm now thinking that it might be better to buy an impreza minus an engine, so I can have an engine built to go into it. That will ensure reliability.

Can anyone tell me where I could look on the net to find cars like that? Looking for a V4 Sti, although would give or take a few years depending on price and condition.

Cheers, Alan
