I think he is talking about Turbo Flutter... is this like the sound: YouTube - What is Flutterdump? or this YouTube - Flutter ***** ?

From what i understand you wouldnt want this on your road car because it would kill the turbo pretty quick (where as a rally car doesnt really care about anything longer than a weekend usually)

Further to the above comments: you do not have a rally car.

yeah remember those cars cost between £250000 and £500000 and get parts replaced as and when and longevity of parts is highly uncommon!
your pockets are no where near as deep as a WRC team budget!

That's fair enough.

The point he was trying to make though, is that the engine in a rally car is rebuilt every year, or at the end of a championship...or if you have deep pockets, even more frequently.

Would love all the noise though.

would have thought the whine is something to do with having straight cut gears

(reverse gear is usually straight cut -- hence sounds different)

I thought he was stating that my setup would only last 2 months.......

Seriously though.........i have had a passenger ride in a spec c ra rally car through a forest stage at speeds up to 100mph......

My car sounds dull compared to the rally car.....the tickover alone is deafening

The chatter noise comes from an external wastegate but there is no point putting one on a standard scoob, really no need for one unless you got a 500to 600bhp monster under bonnet then you will need one, but all not lost cos i get that sound on my scoob with the SC46 turbos internal wastegate chatter but not as loud as them rally beasts

*sniggers at people who think they have anti-lag*

You have a few spits and pops mapped in.

Can't beat it

I know of an impreza rally car that has had alot of stuff done by prodrive. Think it may be an ex british championship car? Anyway, the exhaust manifold pipes are cut to a certain length and the normal subaru rumble isn't there. Sounds amazing though!

Car also goes over huge speed bumps flat out without it being felt in the car. Some piece of kit!

Wastegate chatter is a myth...

The flutter noise you hear is the boost pressure being forced back through the compressor wheel when the throttle plate is shut.

On a road car with a DV or recirc DV that excess boost is vented out of the system. Be it to atmosphere with a VTA or back into the inlet with a recirc.

When you dont run a DV or BOV that excess boost has to go somewhere. It trys to force its way back through the turbo compressor wheel. The chatter is caused by the spinning blades of the compressor wheel cutting the pressurised air as it forces it way back through it.

This does put a loading on the turbo and on a fragile turbo (some IHI series) can cause it to fail. However on hardy turbos such as Garrett/Mistsubishi etc this is not a problem.

The chirp you hear from a WRC car is the 4bar of boost pressure forcing its way back through the compressor.

Hope that clears that bit up

I,d like to see you put your ear to my few spits and pops......lol

The antilag feature on mine is much more aggressive than another car i know of running a different ecu..........coming on and off the throttle makes a huge difference.....

Nothing like the setup on a rally car though.....

most of the noise in my rally car is the gearbox , and trust me you wouldn't put up with that for long in a road car , I have a Modena TEG sport dog box , and even on road sections between stages is enough to get on my nerves , but on the stages its awesome.
I also run an aggresive anti lag with a jacked open throttle , as it doesn't tick over properly it also makes it a pig to drive ' normally ' , but it makes a big difference on the stages as I have boost straight away , if I hold it a 4k revs standing still I have 1 bar of boost , but it generates a hell of a lot of heat which doesn't do the car much good , the only downside to running anti lag is that you lose the servo , most people empty the servo and just put a rod through to connect the pedal to the master cylinder ,
