Default Dodgy Visit or Friendly Banter?

The most bizzare thing has just happend here at work

i transit van starts pulling around to the carwash in the lane for an actual wash, i shout over that the transit will not fit, and the driver says

ohh no, i`m not going in, he wants to have a word.

some lad jumps out (3 in the van by the looks of it)

walks over towards the office so i step back and block the entrance, seen this trick loads over the years, one keeps somebody busy while the rest get up to no good.

lad starts asking questions about the scooby, because apparently he has just bought one and needs it tuned. and would i do it if he brought it to me?? (wtf)

while he is doing this i am eye balling the other ones who are now reversing back out from the wash lane.

this lad is proper scottish by the sounds of it, and is asking bizzare questions about the spoiler and such. (he is getting one word answers in return)

TBH my gut instinct is saying this is dodgy as hell as nobody in a right frame of mind would do this IMO

so i ask him

"what the **** is the crack with this, you 3 just turn up in a van and start asking questions about my car, who are you?"

"oh i have just passed a few times and fancied asking some questions, i will just leave it then"

he got back in the van and they left

dodgy as hell, or trying to be friendly?

Tough call, a mate of mine would have done the same cause he's a major car nut... and he drives a white transit...

Trouble is they don't realise how suspicius they look asking about someone's car etc..

I'd take the long way home a few times.... just to be sure

both work and home is all camera`d up anyway, so i can check home and see if the same van has been lurking around.

i am dubious because when i was 17 i had a few lads asking me questions about my car at the time, seamed genuine, one of them was asking about the flushed tailgate i had on the car and while i was at the rear of the car one of the other ones nipped inside and stole a fooken CD player

turned out he was a local drug dealer and did not take kindly to having his windows smashed later on that night, that caused quite a bit of trouble "back in the day"

but once bitten, twice shy and all that malarkey, why somebody from scotland would come down to newcastle to be a window cleaner is beyond me

i know the weather is a tiny little bit better, but the whole thing stinks of "dodgy"

used to get quite a few of the gypos turning up in the summer in various vans wanting free stuff and had to chase them all away.

Yes, agreed.

Best err on the side of caution in situations like this, gut feeling is everything.

Either sniffing around after the car, or hoping to distract you while asking about it while the others sneak in and do over the office - sounds like a standard distraction thing.

possible, but its running a fairly distinctive private plate, so i would assume they would rather have a none "look at me" type one.

gut feeling was they were trying to distract me, i got the impression they were "gypos"after dealing with that type quite a bit in the past.

hopefully my rather abrupt conversation with him means he will **** off and chance his luck elsewhere

seen this kinda s**t before
sope the place out first before they come back and do it over
should have asked him what car he had and the spec!!
he would have gone "ERRRRRRR" then u would have busted him for sure!

we do things properly up this way and always have a nice section of scaffolding pole beside one of the cupboards

scottish & geordie is quite similar IMO, we just say the words more "proper" then that lot

oonly problem with scaffolding is that u need to make sure its not rusty
golf clubs have a lovely grip compared to scaffolding!

Agree dodgy as ****. Your instincts were correct on this occasion I feel.
Nothing to do with them being scottish and all of course

That, my friend, was a visit from some Pikeys.

The strange accent was probably not scottish

Keep an eye on the car for the next few days and be extra vigilant on your way home. Take different routes etc. I've even be known to take a couple of turnings before mine on the odd oocasion when i feel like i'm being followed.

Yeah....dodgy that!

I take a few turns if I think I'm being followed aswell!

Once....it ended up being a car from 10 doors down! LOL!

Could it have been an Irish accent?

Sounds like a distraction to me, either looking at cloning or scoping security etc

Keep you eye out from now on looking for it returning, i don't suppose you took the reg plate of the van, worth keeping hold of incase anything happens.
Don't leave sat navs phones etc in the car and try to park it under cameras. Not much else you can do really.

Sorry, its all a bit obviuos advice but i would certainly be worried by what you say.

to be honest, first thing i thought was "another bunch of irish gypos" but then after he spoke a bit more i recognised the "hock aye the nooo" in his voice

route home is not a problem, its via a dual carriage way anyway LOL plus i have the liberty of finishing whatever time i like, just because i can

would be funny if he posted on SN saying that he was trying to be friendly to another owner today and got a load of **** instead

keys etc etc are not a problem either, keys are locked away in the key safe at work with all the other customers keys, and at home, well i live in a block of apartments and you have a bit of a battle before you even get to my front door, which then has no letter box + bump proof locks fitted, i think they would rather take next doors porshe instead anyway

**** it though, not worth losing sleep over, if it gets nicked tonight it will only get 5 miles down the road under boost before the headgasket spits all its coolant out as its buggered LOL

8 cams at work and 1 cam at home are all setup for motion detect recording so i have logs of any movement outside, just logged into the work one online and nobody has been sniffing about after hours, just remembered that the "american" circus is in town

I was going to say the same re the Irish accent! They love a trip into our work place!

Maybe they are getting 'clever' now and trying different accents

had loads of irish ones in to be honest, plus we get a fair share of normal paying scotsmen in (hard to believe i know the tight gits )

work is right next to a premier inn on the A19 which is a pretty big main vein type road for going south so we get loads of scottish in travelling about, usually in nice expensive rep mobiles, not feckin window cleaning vans

Would have a word with the local traffic police, let them know the story / reg number off the van and am sure if there is anything that does not check out with them then they will let you know.
