Confused….
Confused….
Can anyone help shed some light on the differences over the years of the WRX’s and the WRX STi’s????
I’ve read several different websites and there seems to be on the whole confusing and often controversial/conflicting information.
This is what I’ve learned from Wikipedia:
So is this correct that a 1996/7 WRX had 276bhp?? If so, is that the same power as the same year STI had or did the STi still produce more power?
What other real world changes or enhancements did the Version III STI have over the WRX and is it worth the extra money now?
I’m also a little lost on the differences between the STI models. The Wikipedia article says the STI Version III had 280PS but it then states the STI Version IV had a power increase to 280PS. So where they the same, or are one or both figures wrong and if so by how much?
Lastly, what real world differences are there between the STI Version III thru STI Version VI??? I haven’t seen anywhere that explains the changes and benefits.
Apart from age and condition would I really be better off spending more money to buy a Version V or VI over a Version III or IV???
Sorry for such a long post, but could really do with some expert advice on this one.
Thanks for all your help.

Sti's had the close ratio gearbox.
Most Sti's came with intercooler waterspray but had to suffer with no antilock brakes as a consiquence.
The version 3 STi's onwards had 4 pot brake calipers.
All Sti's had forged pistons
The Sti 3 onwards came with a IHI VF series turbo instead of a TD05 like the Sti V1+2 and wrx's.
Pretty sure that all the Sti's even the V1 came with uprated springs and shocks.

There are legions of detail differences, the trouble is its all very MY specific.
ABS of course (on classic STi's) had to be dropped for DCCD as the two were incompatable, IC water sprays not really having much effect on brakes!
All Classics came under the gentlemans agreement of 276bhp/280PS (often causing confusion as some though 280PS an increase over 276bhp which its not!) and so quoted power figures are irrelevant.
STi's have stronger internals and often better flowing heads etc than WRX's.

The reason that the IC spray affects the breaks is cos the water bottle for the water spray goes where the ABS pump should be!! Its either one or the other NOT both!!

ok, so does that mean a regular 4 door STI III or IV would not then have DCCD?
But would have somewhere around 276bhp or maybe more, with a tougher engine, better handling and some cosmetic mods over a regular WRX of the same year(s)?
Ta.

Cheers. Already read that and it was one of the sources of confusion as it seems to have among the good info some miss leading, conflicting and inaccurate info on it as well.
