Seen a 1999 STI Type R for sale. It is advertised with a LINK ECU and also has a Knock gauge. Can someone out there please explain to me what these are/do?
Excuse my stupidity
P.S. He is asking 14K for it, but will drop the price (in hunderds). Is this reasonable. Done 37,000 miles.

Link ECU is a means of remapping the boost fuelling and ignition which should make it not only better performing but also safer on UK fuel if it has been mapped well as well as more economical possibly. Find out who mapped it. If it was BR Developments then you could have a very nice car. Can't comment on price. Note the Type R has quite short gear ratios. Obviously you are up on all the stuff about checking the pedigree of Grey imports. Also find out if the speedo, fuel filler neck and fog light have been done - almost certainly will have been. Has it been delimited - Jap cars are limited to about 112 - not so good if you want to track the car or explore its performance where appropriate to do so. I am not sure if the Link delimits the car or not - I guess it would.
Check it has ABS. Get it professionally inspected if in any doubt.
see the sidc FAQ.
Knock link detects engine pre-ignition, pinking, detonation which can blow up your engine. Necessary safety measure on a remapped car.

Scoobysport can do inspections I believe.
