Default How much difference will a lightened flywheel make with AP clutch?

Hi all

I'm fitting an AP organic clutch to my hawkeye STI and wondered how much difference fitting a lightened flywheel would make?

Any experiences?

Dan

If you fit a new flywheel at the same time it would make it easier for the new clutch to bed in.

I have driven a few cars with lightened flywheels - one being the Porsche Carrerra V10

Initially
Difficult to drive (we me anyway), you loose inertia from the flywheel, more likely to stall until you get used to it.

Your car will pick up quicker and rev a bit more freely.

It will take some getting used to over your last set up. I would say try it first but really you would need a day or two to get used to it.

Would i bother with a road car which i use every day- no, probably not

Just as easy to drive as a normal scooby Dan,no stalling problems,as for making things easier for the engine its got to help things spin up a bit quicker, throw some lightweight pulleys on while your at it Dan my boy.

i run a act pro lite flighwheel (around 4.5kg) with a ap organic clutch, it took around a week to get use to, but now it feels very good indeed. i wouldnt go back to the standard weight again.

yes it takes a few more reves to pull off, but the engine does rev up more freely

Think mines about 7kg hardly that noticeable in driveability-immediately noticeable on acceleration, even if like me you dont go for the lightest definately a worthwhile mod that i wouldnt be without now-had mine fitted along with an exedy organic clutch in my classic.(Just remember you dont have to go for the lightest)

Will the AP clutch handle your spec?

Driving characteristics will depend on the weight of the flywheel.

Around 6kgs you will notice a nice difference without sacrificing road driving. The lightest flywheels around 4.2kgs will take some getting used to at first, but you will notice a bigger difference.

For the average road user 6kg will be ideal

PM me if you are interested in a 6kg forged one. Under £200, brand new

The other time you will notice it is slow speed manouevring e.g. crawling at say 10 mph in slow traffic when the oem flywheel allows you to roll in gear smoothly whilst off the throttle, the lightweight flywheel will cause mild kangaroo hopping unless you drive it positively. Not a major issue, you just think that it's your driving ability has gone to pot until you realise.

I have to say the lightweight flywheel on my 04 WRX made it feel like it just wanted to accelerate so much faster. But then again the clutch was slipping for a while before that lol.
