next car Stick with Impreza STI Spec D or swap to legacy Spec B
Hi
Just wondering if anybody as swapped from impreza ownership to legacy spec B.
I have had an 1998 classic Impreza for 9 Years and loved it but i've decided its time to swap for a newer model. I've got two children now and may need something thats more discreet.
been thinking of a STI spec D with PPP for a couple more years or changing to the legacy.
Do not like the new hatchback style so will not be having a new STI.
Has anybody done the same thing.
How does a legacy feel as a drivers car? I know it want have the turbo feel but it looks like a good car for the money.
Hope somebody can enlighten me
Thanks
Elad

elad,
i had a 2001 PPP WRX for 5 years then moved to a Legacy Spec B auto for 16 months - now back with GB270 Sportwagon.
i liked the Legacy very much but nothinhg like the grunt of a modified WRX.
a used Legacy Spec B is a great value car but i suggest you stick with the WRX.
all the best.

I love them TBH, although I heard they felt a bit heavy changing from an Impreza ? Estate version would be very nice indeed !
Spec-D is great, but for its rear foot room and a medium sized boot its not a 'large' family car. When mine are older its not going to be overly comfortable on long journeys sitting behind me

The Leggy just feels bigger. It's just as nimble and is smoother around town and on poor surfaces, I have the Spec B (Bilsteins) so this may help. Love my little TV Display too
Having been on a few runs with other Imprezas it does aquit itself very well. It's an estate too.

I've had a new WRX PPP, new STi PPP, new Leggy 2.5 and then finally a new Leggy Spec B Tourer, so I feel I'm in a pretty good position to pass comment.
The Legacy is obviously a slower, heavier and bigger car, it aint no Impreza and it's not trying to be, it's a class or two up from an Impreza.
You still have the familiar all wheel drive, boxer engine, inverted struts, it's similar mechanically, but the dynamics are more in common with an executive BMW, Audi etc, but without the badge snobbery.
It has great grip, reasonable pace and is generally bullet proof, but things to watch for are corroded alloys (around the center caps), creaky plastics, dash rattles, heavy oil usage and rattly shockers.
You'll have no trouble getting a 3 or 4 hour test drive, dealers are overloaded with them, IM imported far too many, so press hard for big discount if you decide to buy new or used from an approved dealer.
In my opinion - Don't buy the Euro Spec B new unless you plan to run it for 5 years, the depreciation is chronic.

thanks everybody for the replys
I still not sure what to do. My heart says stick with Impreza but the Spec B does look a lot of car for the money especially on the used market.

Just to add a potential spanner to the works, have you thought about the forrester sti?
I have heard good things about them and the sti versions look quite nice for a bigger car

I've just got a Spec D (not ppp though). It's my first Subaru, and I love it. It's faster than my old S2000 and has 5 seats, leather, great sterio and fantastic performance. Plus, it's reasonably discrete.

I suppose I should think thats the sensible car of the family and get a STI Spec D but something keeps throwing me back to the My07 legacy spec B.
Mind you the Legacy B4 STI saloon looks nice on litchfields site. Shame there are no used ones around.

David Hendry Cars have a few 04's JDM Spec B's.
There is no true STi Legacy. A "Tuned by STi" Leggy but that only had loads of STi bit's but the standard 290BHP. The silver on on Litchfields is s very nic car, sat in it, my WR Ltd is the same engine etc but the colour and spec are better (IMHO). Ask Iain if anyone is off loading an older one.

Get over the worst of the depreciation by buying a good 2nd hand UK spec B - loads on Autotrader from £12k to £15k. Or get a brand new one for £21k with almost £8k discount. The be ready to pay out all your savings at the pump.................

Hello Elad
I did exactly what you are envisaging, back in December. Had a 1997 Impreza GT turbo, then a 2002 StI, then a 2004 Litchfield Type 25.
What I diud was buy a 2003 Legacy estate turbo, JDM model, £15.000 but truly as new. It's a fine car, but it can never be an Impreza. The engine power is fine (310 BHP with an exhaust and intake kit), but of course you don't get a locking front diff so there is some understeer, but using wigth trnasfer you can cancel that and the handling limits are pretty high. I recommend the switch!
By the way, I gat 25 mpg average around town, and 28-29 on a trip. This model is MUCH faster than the Spec B and uses less fuel.

2nd hand looks a good option not many manual my07 saloons around though. Where have you seen new ones for £21K? That sound a very good discount.

I've got one of the 25 STi Ltds, which is very similar to the Spec D and I love it. The Legacy will be more confortable though, which might be a good thing with regard the kids!
But can't fault mine......no spolier, no gold wheels, but a leather interior....so probably more of a Spec D than a Spec D!!!
I think I'd change to a Legacy Estate sometime in the future, or maybe even an Outback??? Hmmm.....
Not few a few years though....I'm having too much fun in my Black STi!

You might also want to have a look at the slightly older twin turbo Legacies, the B4 RSK saloon or the GT-B estate. There's usually 10 or so of them on AutoTrader at any one time, or you can click on View my Scooby to look at my one 280bhp, billsteins, boost starting at 2500 rpm then more boost kicking in at 4000 rpm. I love mine to bits. After 2003 they went to twin scroll single turbo which some people prefer. I haven't seen many of them about though.
