Default what noise ??

The car is a 2004 blob eye wrx (uk), Brother in law brought a subaru 3 weeks ago and it has a strange whining noise.. It has no mods at all so not been tampered with.. Please have a listen!!
Video of engine - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Somebody told me it was the bearings in the turbo had gone but somebody told me there is nothing wrong with it and is normal.. I think the noise is coming from the passenger side of the intercooler..

P.s turn speakers down as i held it abit close..

Normally if the turbo bearings are shot, you can hear the whine after you shut
the engine down due to the turbo spinning much faster than the engine - even on tick over.
Might even be a tight alternator belt/air con belt or timing belt.
If in doubt - have it checked out at a garage

If the bearing IS spinning inside the turbo, it's debris is in the oil heading for the engine.... so will **** the bearings, oil pump etc.

Sounds awful....

Sounds like belts maybe? Knackered cambelt tensioner - if so, that would be more noticeable at the front, perhaps? Or water pump?

It could even be an air leak of some description. It sounds like a whine/whistle noise....

Check around the engine and try to eliminate items one at a time....

Just a thought but the dump valve is on the intercooler, that side. Might be worth checking that it's piped up properly and bolted to the intercooler securely.

Other things to try.... Get someone to push the clutch pedal, turn the air-con on/off etc.

It was the cambelt tensioner on my 04 WRX mate. Sounds similar to the video but it isnt that clear. Sounds like radio interference when driving, goes up and down with the revs?

I had a whine on mine that got gradually worse until it was really loud and noticeable., booked it into the garage for one night after work, but someone mentioned the Aircon pump being lubricated by the Aircon gas. I drove to the garage with the aircon on and the noise was completely gone by the time I got to the garage. LOL
Your handbook states to run the Aircon for 10 minutes at least every week.

Just loaded the video and sounds like what mine did. try running it with aircon on full freeze for a good twenty minutes.
