is 145,000 miles high on a 1993 classic?
hi all, little help please.
seen a scooby with-
-short block engine
-front mount intercooler
-tdo5 20g turbo
-forged pistons
-pocketed pistons
-Billet crank
-Performance exhaust
-Bigger exhaust hosing
-Turbo dynamics actuator
-Tubular manifold
-Steel headgaskets
-Rebuilt gearbox
-Apexi ecu commander
-AP Perforamce clutch
-4 pot brakes all round
-Full mapped by Zen Motorsport

Sounds like it has had a bit of work done. How many miles is on the short motor? Service history? Aside from that bushes will certainly need looking at more closely, suspension, ball joints, etc etc. Its not just the engine you should be thinking about.

It is a very high milage, but it's a very old car now... to be expected? As long as it has been cared for and rebuilt/repaired when needed then it could run on for a while longer. I'd expect to put time and money into an old car/engine though.

yeah its miles not km unfortunatly, he only wants £3500 as hes starting new business??also has uprated suspensions etc.
has some service history, has all the modification reciepts totaling over £10,000.

Always hard to price a modified car, but I wouldn't personally pay £3500 for an 15 year old car with 145,000 miles on the clock.

For a 14 year old car, that's just over 10,000 miles per year - not bad.
At that mileage, I would be looking just as much at the rest of the running gear (suspension, bearings, etc) rather than just the engine (which seems to have been rebuilt somewhere along the line anyway).
My MY93 WRX has over 170,000 miles (around 120,000 in the UK) - it's had its fair share of hard driving, but has coped with it well. It has been decat'ed for the last 5 years, and last year was chipped. Nothing fundamental has really worn out yet. For example - I replaced the original clutch last year, the odd sensor has broken and I replaced the rear anti-roll bar drop links a while back for the MoT - all 'wear and tear' items really....

in comparison my car is a my99 uk turbo and has 133,500 miles on the clock. for an 8 year old car thats a lot. but the engine is only 70k miles old, and it still has the original gearbox. within its first 9 months of use, it did 22,000 miles so was obviously a fleet car of sorts. hence the condition, been well looked after, not just by me.
currently just wear and tear items....

As stated before 145k is not high miles on an 15yr old car, if its been well serviced and maintained and used on a regular basis then you should just be looking for rot and wear and tear items. Any engine/gearbox etc work carried out, i would like to see receipts from a reputable buisiness not just someone knocking something together in the front room of their mums council house.
I would try and get it for 3k providing it met the above, if not id look for another, its not like there is a shortage of them.
Around 9 years ago when i was leaving the forces in germany i bought a sierra 2.9 4wd to carry all my stuff back, it had only 2 owners which had driven it to and from the uk to germany all its life and had clocked up 180k, regular maintenance had ensured it drove perfectly, i kept it for a futher 3 years and when i sold it on for more than i paid for it, it had covered over 230k with no problems, no failed mot's etc, great car.

14 years, not 18.
Not necessarily high "for the year" but still high mileage nonetheless.
Remember, everthing about the car has done 145,000 miles, not just the engine.
£2k tops.

£2000-£2500, unless it's got a high spec and lots of receipts. As has been said already, there are lots for sale.
At the end of the day you get a feel for a car when you look at it. Also, check for accident damage and how many miles have been covered each year.
Of course with a car of that age don't expect perfection, but don't buy one with poor repairs etc. Good luck and happy hunting.

looking at the spec of the engine i would say have a look at it because that in itself would cost a fortune to build so long as the engine has not done silly miles this is not a bad price so long as the rest of the car looks good and well maintained ? reciepts for the work done.
with that spec what bhp has it got 330-370hp
at the end of the day its up to you you either like or you dont
but just because of the hi mileage doesnt mean its not been maintained properly........
what i would do is see how much he wants rid offer very low £2600.
but if its what your after then the asking price is not that bad when anyone else with that spec would want about 6-7000 for a facelift model
hth danny

If that 20g is mapped properly then that rebuilt gearbox will be needing another rebuild soon!

If Zen know the car then give them a ring and see what they say about it, if its been well maintained and all the mods are working well (Zen would know by how it mapped) then it could be worth it.
Even if it checks out OK you have to bear in mind the perils of running a car of that mileage. Anything that is still OE will be near the end of its life - sensors, hoses bushes etc.
If the guy has 10k of receipts see what things have been replaced rather than modded. For example how much of the suspension was replaced?
The gearbox rings alarm bells - if its been rebuilt with OE WRX parts then it will fail again with this turbo, usually sooner rather than later....
If you are still interested I'd give Zen a ring at least - or better still let them evaluate the car and modify your offer on their findings

just my 2 cents...
if its been driven sensibly, its barely even run-in yet
id rather buy a car with 145k motorway miles than say 60k track/thrashed miles
but then again, you can't guarantee thats not 145k thrashed miles
as for the price, im getting offered £2500 trade-in on a 95 wrx with nowhere near that good spec, 90k miles and with about £500-800 or so of work needing doing. so if its in good condition, with that spec, and no immediate work needed (ideally get a specialist to check it), £3500 doesnt seem too bad privately. i bet you could negotiate down a couple of hundred if you wanted, as most people will be put off by 145k miles.
to be honest, when buying a car that old you run a risk of the engine going soon after buying it regardless of 145k on the clock or 60k on the clock
IMO in good nick, these cars at the circa £3k mark are bargains. when u consider escort cosworths of the same age still fetching 10k, and even 15k in some cases... nuts
