API
A couple of months bk i went to API and had a cam belt change with new cam and crank seals as they were leaking . Drove the car for a few days and the oil leak was back . I thought here we go they havent done it properly and its gonna cost me again . I went bk about a week later and the oil leak was traced to the srews at the bk of the oil pump working their way loose , a common fault . I have been heavily ripped off by supposed specialists in the past but API supplied a new API oil pump and sprocket , new cam belt in case the old one suffered oil contamination, new oil and filter and topped up all the fluids. To my suprise they only charged me for the new oil pump and sprocket at a reduced rate and said that if the problem is not rectified in the first place then they will not charge to fix the same problem twice and that is API policy, which is a lot better than the usual answer of there is no guarantee in motor sport . Thanks to David and the guys at API - top guys and a true Subaru specialists .

It's Service like this that we should cheer .... good on them.
I did read about the Oil Pump Bolts working loose on the Classics when I bought mine new - not heard anything about them since (or maybe I miss those posts?)
Whats the issue and can they be checked easily when the CamBelt change is carried out?

Thanks for all the nice words guys, much appreciated.
There is slight confusion here regarding the oil pump mod and the oil leak on this particular car. From memory the two are not related in this instance.
The problem was something to do with the belt gear that runs on the crank and works with the seal. It was something like; the trigger that is pressed on the back of that gear running out of true and damaging the new oil seal and eroding the face of the oil pump. Either way, we sorted it at no extra cost.
The screws on the oil pump thing is a long standing problem. There are 5 phillips headed, countersunk, set screws that hold the back plate of the oil pump in place. They work loose over the years. We have identified this as a major contributing factor to engine failures and now recommend that for a few extra quid [ £45.00 ], at the time of a cam belt service, we whip the pump off and check it, loctite the screws and refit it with a new seal.
No brainer really. When the back of the pump loosens, oil pressure leeches away rather than passing into the engine through the correct gallery, path of least resistance and all that. It tends to lower oil pressure by up to 20 psi and on an older engine is perhaps more than the engine can cope with.
A simple fix and off you go knowing that the oil pressure is as good as the pump can manage.
Good luck all, David APi

Sorry mate, this is something we have brought in since August, after much deliberation and hand wringing here about trying to avoid add-ons to costs, where we try to keep to a rigid price structure.
Rather than; know we can't do the job for the price quoted and run the bill up once the car is here. I hate that and won't have any part of it if it can be avoided.

PS still probably only 40,000 miles or so to go .............
