Default Fuel pump stuck in tank

Just had my car serviced at API (top blokes, definitely recommended), I asked for them to replace the fuel pump with an uprated unit and the standard pump is stuck in the tank! Anyone got any suggestions as to how this is caused, and how it can be removed that doesn't involve dropping the tank?

"stuck in the tank" needs far more explanation, what's actually stuck??

Dropping the tank wouldn't give you any better access than that already available.

Surprised David and co didn't give more of an explanation.

Item 19 in that diagram, you can get it an inch off the tank and that's it. The mechanic reckoned the end of the unit had possibly got bent from an attempted previous removal. They did give more details but unfortunately I can't recall it!

Ps, I believe David no longer works at API and that Simon now owns the business.

Stuck in the tank..... never heard that before. They can be a pain to get out as you need to twist and turn it to get it out but can't see how it would get stuck.

Maybe API have gone to pot since David left....lol

Didn't know David had left.

Never heard of that problem before.

As Matty says you usually need to twist it out to clear the level float arm without bending it.

Does seem very strange to me too, I've removed them twice and don't even remember there being the slightest problem, wouldn't know I'd done it if I didn't know I had, if that makes sense.

Surly trained mechanics with a workshop at their disposal must be able to come up with some way of getting it out.
