Default Ever had your engine steam cleaned?

I've just had a 50K mile service done during which the cam belt was changed. Aparently to do this they need to disconnect some coolant hoses. In the process the mechanic (authorised Subaru dealer) sprayed the engine bay with coolant (obviously didn't bother draining it first).

Anyway after collecting the motor, once the engine heated up it began to burn off the antifreeze - smoke everywhere It burnt off pretty quick but now the motor stinks. The stinking engine bay smell is so strong its filtering into the cabin and ...

So I thought about having it steam cleaned. Has anyone ever done this? Is it to be avoided or is it OK with a few tips on what engine bay components to avoid? Advice appreciated.

I have always been warned of steam cleaning a car with a lot of electronics under the bonnet. Impreza has tonnes

I would advise against it.. But would be interested if you do get it done as mines covere din power steering fluid and such at the moment

I clean mine under the bonnet all the time, normally pressure wash it with detergent though then spray on a fine mist of silicone lubricant to stop it from going 'dry'..

The electrics are pretty hardy, the connectors and good and the Impreza doenst have that much under the bonnet compared to most cars these days that tend to have the ECU under the bonnet as well!

I jet wash under the bonnet of my rally car after every rally , after some rallies we even have to take the seats out and jet wash inside , once I have finished though I go over the whole engine bay with a blow gun to blow off all the water

Sorry should the answers to this thread be: Put water on a boxer engine, are you insane? everyone knows boxer engines were designed by pigmy fairys in the forests of Woowah and built from the bark of the old Coomarey tree, they must be touched with silk gloves and only maintained by specially trained rhodium coated technicians.

Well at least I got a laugh!

I think I'll do it. Soon as I can find a massive hairdrier to dry it off - before I start! Get all that moisture out - and then get it soaked

thanks.
