Default Top or Front Mounted Intercooler

What are the Pros and Cons?

My intercooler is looking a bit tatty so I was thinking of getting a new one.

Either a Top Mounted like this:

Or a front mounted:

I am unsure what to go for. I have heard stories of increased lag with a fmic put they can handle more boost/power?

Opinions?

just recived a hdi-hybrd fmic so they get the thumps up but i am about to fit larger turbo, big injectors, headers etc etc so need one as i hope to be running near to 400bhp in my p1

as far as i am aware and someone may correct me but if you are intending on running up to 340bhp then the top mount would be enough but if you were looking for more then you would need to go fmic as the tmic would struggle

the sti 8 topmount can handle 400bhp (i will be trying soon) so if your looking for less than that its worth a try,

Yes , but like everything else on Andys car it is a one off and much larger than the STi8 unit...I have nothing against topmounts but you cant beat a front mount.....

If you can use the search function there is a very good thread about this where Harvey and Andy F have some conflicting, although informative views on this subject. I think its in the technical section.

Just to let you know chaps, the guy who owns the P1 in the picture is a really good friend of mine. he's running his p1 at 350BHP AT THE MOMENT, its currently set to go in for a big change in Sept to reach the dizzy heights of 400-500BHP, i recommend FMIC only if your changing other aspects of your engine

thats my car , its running 346bhp with 344lbs on torque at the moment. I noticed quite a difference when the intercooler was fitted on this car and a pervious wrx i used to have. As others have said you can still achive 330bhp with a top mount but any more then that you really need to go front mounted.

My classic is running 360bhp and 343lbft of torque, I have a FMIC fitted to mine, I have noticed a slight difference with every mod I have done to my car, I ran my FMIC unmapped for a few months but when it was remapped to use the FMIC there was another noticable difference. I went FMIC purely for the look of the front of the car and also for the upgrade possibilities at a later date! oh yeah and the noise the car now makes running a roller bearing turbo, fmic and aps induction kit is fantastic.

Stay clear of the cheapO ones on ebay. Had a few in stock and sent them back cause the were pants, I would say you can't go wrong with a sti top mount upto 400hp .. Then you want to go for a quality name front mount ...

Just getting some interest on Perrin ones if anyone is interested https://www.scoobynet.com/group-buys...ml#post7172797

I am running 330 with my V5 Type R at the momenton the STI8 topmount IC and splitter in std scoop,
I will soon be getting Andy F to put in a MD321H and some other bits, and I hope to be around the 400 mark (on a topmount) we will see what restriction if any it is,

Mark,

Mark,

You shouldnt have any problems at all mate.

The larger more efficient turbo isnt working as hard so naturally you will see lower charge temps than if you are working the ***** off of a smaller turbo.

Heatsoak whilst stationary will be your only concern with an STI 8 cooler, other than that you should be bang on
