newby question (fuel)
hi guys,
i will be the proud owner of a 53 plate wrx sti type uk with PPP as of next sunday
i am fully aware that the car will require top grade fuel i.e shell V-Power.
my question is does it have to be V-Power or will any Super Unleaded be ok?
i.e ESSO Super, BP ulitmate both 97RON rather than 98RON.
also what about the likes of tesco's 99 Super?

V-Power is generally the preferred choice with Tesco 99 running a close second. The others are not so popular due to lower RON and AFAIK Prodrive mapped the ecu on the PPP for Shell Optimax now superceded by Shell V-Power.

cheers for the reply.
so it wouldn't do any harm running on 97RON just perhaps not the best performance. just don't want any pre det from using lower grade fuel
i will always try and fill the car up with V-Power but just want to make sure it will be ok on other fuel when i can't find a shell station!

You wont do any harm at all running it on 97RON Fuel... The PPP is designed to run 97RON Fuel.

If i was to rank the Fuel Stations that i use it would go like this:
Shell V-Power (Highest Octane Available at a reasonable price whilst also having good burn characterisics and engine cleaning detergents preventing carbon build up... its rated at 99RON, but can be anywhere from 98-100 depending on how old the batch you fill up with is)
Esso 97RON (Basically all the good of V-Power with a slightly lower octane, im caught between V-Power and Esso 97 in mine as i find the Esso Fuel to provide a really nice smooth and clean feel to the car.. kinda hard to explain, but it just feels right. I think you will find that Bob Rawle (very Respected Subaru Mapper) also recommends Esso 97RON as his 2nd choice fuel to V-Power)
Tesco 99RON (This is a 'Green' Fuel, and contains the highest volume of Ethanol that a modern petrol engine can take. It doesnt quite have the same burn qualities of the 2 above due to this, and generally will provide a slightly lower MPG as a result... but its cheap, and its a high octance which is always a winner!)
I would stay away from BP if possible though, as quite a few users here seem to report knock under hard use on their fuel.
If you cant find any of these, then 95RON is also fine in a UK car as long as your not driving it hard... (ie: Redlining, and excessive boost...) But you will find with PPP you can still be fairly rapid without having to push the car to its limits.
Hope this helps,

Forgot to add... other than Tesco's i would also avoid Supermarket Fuels as generally they are just re-branded BP Fuel.
Most of all... ENJOY IT!! Smile-Ville is about to have a new tennant

I've an 04 WRX and was forced this week to put 95 RON in for the first time since I got it 12 months ago. I have noticed no performance drop when compared to BP Ultimate (our local 97 RON fuel) apart from the fact that it now idles at lower revs for some reason
I do like how it runs on V-Power and I have always noticed a difference when using that but i'm getting fed up of the 50 minute/25 mile round trip to buy it since the local two garages have close down!
I don't think we need to be as scared of 95 RON as some people make out.

I think you will find this is BP Re-Branded.
Knocking (also called pinking or pinging)—technically detonation—in internal combustion engines occurs when fuel in the cylinder is ignited by the firing of the spark plug and smooth burning proceeds but some of the unburned mixture in the combustion chamber explodes before the flame front can reach it, combusting suddenly before the optimum moment of the four-stroke cycle
