Help me spend 7.5k
Hi all,
Im new to the world of scooby. Heres my story. For the past 6 months i have owned a mitsubishi FTO GPX. Which i love. Was built in 95 so its starting to show its age. so ive been looking for a new car. Ive been looking at civic type R's etc for a few months but last weekend i went on a Rallying track day. All i can say is OMG . I drove and new Evo and a new WRX STI. Both i loved. very fast and great to drive. So i came home and started looking at prices. I love the look of the new Evos but the older one imo dont look so good. So i think a scooby is for me. plus readying a few posts it seems that evo cost more to keep going in service costs etc, correct me if im wrong.
Ive been looking around and with 7.5k i think i can get a 2001 wrs sti with about 50k on the clock. Does this sound about right? Ive been reading post and FAQ but there seem like ALOT of versions out there. What would you guys recommend for my budget and why?
Cheers
Chris

I think you will be very lucky to get a genuine STi newage for £7.5k, you might get an STi 5 or 6 for that or a WRX newage.
STi 5 RA is my favourite classic putting aside the limited editions.

There is an STI type RA and an RB5 on autotrader in your price range. If you want a decent spec impreza for the kind of money you have I would expect you will have to look at the mid to late 90s cars. I think most new age and newer STI's will cost you around the £10k mark and upwards.
Some nice WRXs tend to go a bit cheaper than the STIs and limited editions.

cheers for the replys. i guess the other thing i have to consider is insurance. Im only 22 so its never gona be pretty. So i think i should stick to UK cars. How much am i gona miss out on with a WRX over an STI? Ive heard the engines are built stronger but if im planning to mod i.e. new suspension and the like is there anything else i'll miss?
I think this seems like the sort of thing im after
Subaru : IMPREZA WRX (UK MODEL)
i wont be buying for a few months yet, but it gives you the idea

A Uk classic will be best for insurance, but at 22 years old your gonna get slapped on any model Impreza. .
I think an Sti or type R are way out in terms of insurence. I've got a V5 Sti-Ra and pay £950 fully comp with £600 excess ( I tried tons of companys & most wouldn't quote) - I'm 29 with 4years NCB ..

If your going to mod it and not going to want over 280hp a wrx should surfice. TD04 is the limiting factor of the WRX. Change the turbo and then I think the heads and cams start to restrict the power.
Suspension upgrades to a wrx will help it to be on par with an STi.
To be honest, save another £2500 and buy an STi, you'll spend more in the long run if you dont imo.

Don't know what insurance quotes you are getting but I am being quoted twice the money for a 2000 MY classic £5K ish as a Nissan 2004 350z £20k ish. So I would suggest you get your insurance sorted out first before committing any cash

You can spend 7.5k on me if you want, it will go towards getting back some of the money i've spent on my car.

I pay £890 with £500 excess on an sti3. I'm only 24 but have 5 no claims. The policy also covers most mods.
As for the original question, you WON'T be able to find even a slightly decent newage car for 7.5K. Much better off getting a nicely modded UK turbo (You'll probably get one with less than 50K for 7.5!) or a nearly standard sti 5/6.
But as people have already said, check you can insure it first.

My tip: factor in a 'rainy day fund' ...clutch, turbo & major service are pricey consumables & there's also the small chance of the engine letting go ...or find a car with most of above already done

For example purposes I'm 27 with 3 years no claims and have a low risk postcode.
With my old insurer my Uk turbo is £350 less than an STi and £550 less than a Type RA....

No it doesn't. My old MY99 UK turbo with stage one mods, cost exactly the same as my STI3, which as you know, is also an import. Plus, you can't go as fast in an ra, can you?

To be frank, I would look at something else because If you can get insured you are going to be paying through the nose. Personally I wouldn't go above group 18 at your age. I'm 30 with 8 years no claims and am fully comp with protected no claims on an 06 STI at around the £800 with £400 excess. Silly expensive IMO but other quotes were telephone numbers.
My previous car, a group 18 Nissan 350z, cost me £600 to insure with £200 excess as a comparison.

cheers for all the feedback guys. My first port of call is defo my insurance. Im already paying £1400 so im use to a good spanking already . I think im gona have to wait a few years for an STI. 215bhp should do me before mods.

Might be worth getting a quote on a modded WRX and a standard STI. You may save money in the long run on insurance with the STI after all, unless you want to mod that and then you better start buying lottery tickets!
