best to avoid buying one from anyone with a baseball cap or hooded top.

Or from anyone that says it has 300 + bhp regardless of the model, with just a backbox and dump valve.

^^^^^ Very true.

Keep away from ones where the owner can't advise the reasons for the mod's they've done. You'll soon see who's cars are geniune and who's have been abused.

Try and assess why they are selling, after watching these forums for a cpl of years the amount of ppl who buy a subaru only for it to 'develop' a fault within weeks - it's pretty obvious that the car was diagnosed with a fault and sold.

Be wary of anyone who, when test driving, wont give it full boost and WOT - they are probably trying to hide a misfire, smoke etc which usually show themselves under load.

Check for signs of a coolant leak under the bonnet - usually reddish brown residue. This could mean it's lost coolant and overheated and we all know what that does to head gaskets.

If looking at a 99/00 classic check when the MAF was last changed, they are a bit weak on this year and can cause problems when they start to fail.

Oh, and don't buy off anyone who has done mods without mapping, esp induction kits etc as you don't know what the fuelling is like (and has been like since the mods) - I'd expect them to know who the mapper was too.

That's my 2pence worth.

I'd stick with the BMW myself, but I'm getting older now and would like speed in comfort and silence
